SALEM, Va. – Cooper Shore's first-place finish highlighted a full day of wrestling for the Fighting Camels at the Southeast Open, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Cregger Center, on Saturday.

A 125-pound sophomore, Shore scored three decisions and two major decisions on his way to a 5-0 day. Shore improved on his sixth-place performance at last year's competition.

Six other Camels earned top six placements. Michael Trujillo finished in second place at 141 pounds, and his fellow freshman Landon Sargent finished third in the heavyweight division.

Another freshman, Matt Beem, finished in fourth place at 133 pounds. After winning his first two matches by scoring double-digit points each time, he received an injury in his third match to knock him out of the semi-final and third-place match.

Kendrick Hodge was the only Camel who competed at the Dual at the Daddy on Thursday to make the trip to Southeast. After losing his first match of the day, he rattled off four straight victories to take fifth place at 165 pounds.

Logan Heckert finished in fourth place at 174 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division, and teammate Brant Cracraft took fourth at the same weight in the open division.

"Today was a mixed bag. We had some guys who over-performed and some guys who under-performed. The focus moving forward will be getting the team on the same page. I think a lot of the inconsistency came from first tournament jitters and just a lot of freshmen we are still learning about. We gathered a lot of data that we can work with moving forward."

UP NEXT

The Camels travel to take part in WrangleMania in Bethlehem, Pa., next Saturday. The team has duals scheduled against California Baptist at 2:00 and #8 NC State at 4:00.
