BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell scored seven goals in the first quarter and held off San Diego State for a 15-12 win on a rainy Friday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
McKenna Duncan and Ally Heath both registered four goals for the Camels who improve to 2-2 overall. Sara Toner led the way for the Aztecs who drop to 1-4 on the season.
Campbell jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, limiting SDSU to just one shot in the period. The Camels took an 8-4 lead into the half after the Aztecs outscored CU 4-1 in the period.
San Diego State tied the game at 12-12 with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter as Emma Betts recorded her second goal of the second half. The Camels responded as Shania Roehrich bounced in her first goal of the season while Bridget Ahlgren added insurance with an underhanded goal with 1:51 left. Delaney Nicolaus scored the dagger with nine seconds left.
Both Heath and Duncan finished with five points with each pairing their four-goal performances with an assist.
Rebekah Taylor recorded a game-high four caused turnovers and led all players in collecting five ground balls for the Camels. Chandler Stewart added two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Campbell held a 39-22 advantage on shots, 16-10 on ground balls, and a narrow 16-14 edge on draws. Hailey Kohlmann finished with seven draw controls while Katie Ochall had six for the Camels.
Campbell returns to action Sunday as it hosts Binghamton at 1:00 PM.
