CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Bonus point wins from Anthony Molton, Levi Hopkins and Landon Sargent led the Camels to a 19-16 win over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at Maclellan Gym.
The Fighting Camels now sit at 3-7 in duals and 2-0 against SoCon competition, and the Mocs fell to 1-7 (0-1).
A key difference between the teams was Campbell's three bonus-point wins compared to Chattanooga's one. Each team won five bouts, and neither more than two in a row, in a back-and-forth affair that was decided in the final match of the day at heavyweight.
Sargent scored a takedown and four-point near fall in the first period against Ethan Vergara for an early lead. Vergara fought all the way back to down one, 8-7, before Sargent scored two takedowns in the final minute to secure his major decision.
The match began with Molton scoring another tech fall against SoCon competition. He didn't waste any time, scoring five takedowns against Ty Tice in the first period. Molton wound up clinching the tech fall at the 5:13 mark and a score of 24-7.
Chattanooga won a decision at 133 pounds, but Shannon Hanna gave the Camels another five-point advantage with his 5-3 decision over Eli Knight.
The Mocs won bouts at 149 and 157 pounds, coupled with a Campbell point deduction, to take a 9-7 advantage before Dom Baker restored the lead to Campbell by way of an 8-5 decision against Jackson Hurst.
Chattanooga won two consecutive matches again at 174 and 184 to create the largest lead of the dual, 16-10, but Campbell dug deep to earn bonus points in the final two bouts.
No. 32 Hopkins earned a 17-2 (5:57) tech fall against Logan Webster in dominating fashion. Hopkins controlled the action the entire match, forcing Webster into multiple stall calls before a flurry of takedowns secured the tech.
Sargent's major decision followed Hopkins, as the true freshman from Fayetteville moved to 2-0 against SoCon opponents.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Scotti Sentes
"Those are the duals you remember – back and forth with the last match deciding the dual and between two evenly matched heavyweights. It was a fun trip.
Again, it always comes down to bonus points. We split the matches, 5-5, but we scored bonus in three and they only scored bonus in one. We will look to continue to improve, but overall, I was happy with the team and the energy our guys were bringing from the bench cheering on their teammates."
