Wrestling travels to No. 8 South Dakota State

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell wrestling team continues its road swing Saturday, traveling to Brookings, S.D., to face nationally ranked No. 8 South Dakota State in its final dual of the calendar year.

The dual will take place at First Bank & Trust Arena with a 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET) start.. Live results will be available on TrackWrestling. The dual will be streamed live on Midco Sports Plus.

PREVIEWING THE MATCHUP

South Dakota State enters the dual at 2-0, boasting a road win over nationally ranked Minnesota. The Jackrabbits are ranked No. 8 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, marking the highest ranking in program history.

SDSU has nine projected starters ranked by InterMat and FloWrestling. Among the highest ranked are All-American Bennett Berge (No. 5), Julian Tagg (No. 18), Cael Swensen (No. 18) and Moses Espinoza-Owens (No. 17). The Jackrabbits are led by Damion Hahn, the winningest head coach at the Division I level in program history.

Saturday's matchup marks the third all-time meeting between the two programs. The series is tied 1-1, with South Dakota State winning the first meeting in 2006 before Campbell earned a victory in 2011.

LAST TIME OUT

Campbell dropped its Friday night road dual, falling 34-12 to Northern Colorado. The Camels recorded three individual victories, highlighted by a pin from Conor Maslanek at 197 pounds, but a pair of forfeits and a strong middle stretch propelled the Bears to the win.

Northern Colorado opened the dual with a forfeit at 125 pounds before Logan Heil put Campbell on the board with a 5-3 decision at 133. The Bears responded with four consecutive victories, including a technical fall at 149 and a major decision at 157, to take a 21-3 lead. Northern Colorado added a second forfeit at 165 and a major decision at 174, then secured a decision at 184 to extend the advantage to 34-3.

Campbell closed the night with back-to-back wins. Maslanek provided the highlight of the dual, earning a fall at the 2:56 mark at 197 pounds. In the heavyweight bout, Sawyer Van Rider capped the night with a 5-1 decision to set the final score at 34-12.

PRESEASON TALK

Campbell was picked to finish sixth in the Southern Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches.

The Camels enter their first season under head coach TJ Dudley, a three-time All-American who was promoted after serving as a Campbell assistant. Dudley takes over a program that went 7-1 in SoCon duals last season, earning wins over Gardner-Webb, Chattanooga, Davidson, Bellarmine, Presbyterian, VMI and Appalachian State.
