Tales from the Creek | Evelyn Kinlaw Walters

Former Camel standout now longtime golf professional

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – When Evelyn Kinlaw arrived at Campbell for the 1993 fall semester, she didn't have to a make a connecting flight and arrange for group transportation.  She didn't have to adjust to the August heat when she first stepped onto the Keith Hills Golf course as a freshman.  She just had to drive 18 miles north up Highway 421 from Sandy Ridge Country Club to the main campus.

Evelyn was the lone freshman on a roster that included players who had honed their games in Florida, Pennsylvania, Argentina and Canada, as well as to fellow southeastern North Carolina native Martha Shooter.

Evelyn grew up in a golf family and at the time, she might not have known that her golf family would soon expand to include her teammates and coaches.

Over her career, Evelyn played in every event for the Camels.  She helped lead Campbell to 15 tournament titles, including three conference championships, a pair of NCAA regional berths and the program's first trip to the NCAA championship finals.

Following graduation, Evelyn earned her PGA certification and moved all of 17 miles up the road to Bentwinds Golf and Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, where she now serves as Director of Golf.

She has helped grow the game - especially with juniors and ladies programs – in addition to keeping her competitive edge.

All proving that you don't always have to travel far to make a deep and lasting impact.

In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Evelyn talks with Stan Cole about growing up in a golf family, her path to Campbell, being a member of Campbell's first team to qualify for the NCAA Championship finals, her professional career, and more.
