BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell softball team secured its third win of the season over a Big Ten opponent with an 11-5 victory over Ohio State on Saturday night at the Ohio State Tournament.
The Camels opened the game with a two-run first inning. After a leadoff single from senior
Charlie Montgomery, senior
Allyiah Swiney drove her in with a single down the right field line. Freshman
Kylie Specht followed with a perfectly placed bunt to add another run.
Campbell struck again in the second inning, this time with a leadoff double from junior
Grace Kealy. Senior
Alyssa Armijo laid down a bunt to score Kealy and extend the lead to 3-0. A fielder's choice brought sophomore
Haley Krebs across home plate to make it 4-0.
The Camels added four more runs in the top of the third. Campbell used three singles, a hit by pitch and two walks to load the bases and push four runners across. Montgomery, Krebs and junior
Livie Davis each drove in a run in the inning, giving Campbell an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Ohio State scored five runs in the bottom of the third, aided by three Campbell fielding errors.
The Campbell offense kept producing. Back-to-back leadoff singles set the table, and Kealy earned an RBI with a single through the left side. Junior
Madison Ford would score on an Ohio State error before Montgomery drove in a third with a bunt.
The Camels held the Buckeyes scoreless in six of seven innings to secure the road victory.
Campbell finished with 14 hits from eight different players, and seven players recorded an RBI. Kealy went a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and two doubles. Montgomery went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Specht finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, freshman
