In the fall of 1987, Bev Shepard took a chance on a Campbell volleyball program that had just started up two years earlier.Â
Â
Over the next four years, Bev played in every match and every set for the Camels, led the team to its first winning record and a spot in the 1989 Big South Conference title game.
Â
A three-sport standout at Dixon High School, Bev not only excelled on the floor, but also in the classroom at Campbell, where she served as team captain.
Â
Just one year after her 1991 graduation, Bev and her husband Jamie returned to Buies Creek, where she took over as head coach of the program.
Â
After guiding her alma mater's volleyball team for two years, the Marley family returned to their native Onslow County where Bev began a coaching career that lasted two decades and included a combined 21 state playoff appearances for her volleyball and basketball teams.
Â
Earlier this year, Bev Shepard Marley became the first volleyball player to be inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.
Â
In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Bev Marley chats with
Stan Cole about her path to Campbell, raising a family while teaching and coaching, and more.
