March 05, 2025
In the early days of Campbell's transition to NCAA Division I competition – folks who were around campus knew Buies Creek not just as home to a budding law school and an intimate undergraduate setting, but also as a training ground for some of the nation's – and world's – best decathletes.

Orville Peterson and Ernie White both transferred to Campbell to train with the legendary Coach Brant Tolsma.

Before their time was finished, both earned All-America honors and represented their country in the most grueling competition in track and field.

After their training and competitive careers ended, Orville and Ernie both went on to work with young athletes and were both inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.

In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Campbell Hall of Fame members Orville Peterson and Ernie White talk with Stan Cole about their paths to Campbell, training in Buies Creek, competing all over the nation, and more.
