Kleweno Pitches Campbell Past
Virginia Tech 6-0
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell University left-hander Matt
Kleweno tossed a career high eight scoreless innings to lead CU
past Virginia Tech, 6-0, in baseball action on Saturday afternoon
at Taylor Field.
The Campbell offense gave Kleweno all the runs he would need
in the bottom of the fourth inning. Derek Barrows singled to lead
off the inning. Josh Cotten then belted his first home run of the
season over the left field fence, giving Campbell a 2-0 lead. The
Camels doubled their advantage on a pair two-out RBI singles by Sal
Deanda and Jeff Blick.
CU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning.
Blick singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nic Ewing
and was knocked home on a line drive single to left by Derek
Barrows. Barrows advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hokie
pitcher Andrew Wells and was brought home on and RBI single to
right filed by Campbell's catcher, Chris Wiley.
Kleweno, who struck out three batters and walked a pair of
runners, retired the last thirteen batters he faced before giving
way to Josh Blades, who pitched a perfect ninth inning.
With the win Campbell goes to 2-3 on the season and earned a
split of the two-game series with the Hokies, who fall to 1-1.
The Fighting Camels return to action on Friday, Feb. 21, as
they open Atlantic Sun conference play with a three game series
with the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga. Game one of the series is
slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a doubleheader
on Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. [Box
