Corn's Two-Hit Complete Game Leads Jacksonville State past Campbell 4-0
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Jessie Corn pitched a complete game,
two-hit, shut out to lead Jacksonville State past Campbell
University in baseball action, 4-0, Friday night in Buies
Creek.
The junior right-hander struck out nine and allowed only one
walk on his way to his fourth victory of the season. Corn allowed
just one CU base runner to reach third base. Campbell starter Matt
Kleweno allowed just one earned run in eight innings of work but
suffers the loss dropping his season record to 1-3. Kleweno
scattered six hits and struck out three.
The Gamecocks scored the only runs they would need in the
third inning. Clint Carrol singled to lead off the inning. Shundell
Russaw reached on error by Kleweno, after Russaw's bunt attempt was
popped up then misplayed allowing Carrol to move to second. JSU
loaded the bases on a single by Kerri Fair and cracked the
scoreboard on Matt Ruckdeschel's sacrifice fly to left filed,
scoring Carrol. Kleweno got out of further trouble, getting an
inning ending double play.
The Gamcocks added to their lead when Carrol earned a one-out
walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Russaw and a two-out single
to left center field by Fair, scoring Carrol to give JSU a 2-0
lead.
JSU scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth inning to run
its lead to 4-0. Camel reliever Jared O'Quinn hit Evan Conley with
one out. O'Quinn then issued back-to-back walks before giving way
to Josh Blades. With the bases loaded, Russaw grounded out to
shortstop, scoring Conley. Blades then threw a wild pitch allowing
Turner to cross the plate.
Fair and and Conley each finished with a pair of the hits for
the Gamcocks. Jeff Blick and Tom Rispoli collected CU's two
hits.
