Campbell Wins Hatter Fall Classic With School
Record Total
DeLAND,
FLA. -- Campbell placed five individuals among the top 14 and won
the Hatter Fall Classic women's golf tournament with a
school-record low total for a 36-hole event Tuesday at Victoria
Hills Golf Club.
The
victory was Campbell's first of the 2004-05 season and marked the
14th-consecutive year that the Lady Camels have earned at least one
tournament crown under the direction of head coach John Crooks. It
also marked the 46th tournament coaching triumph for Crooks, who
stands behind only Dan Brooks of Duke among active NCAA Division I
women's coaches in career tourney wins.
On
Tuesday, Campbell shot its season-low round for the second-straight
day and finished with a 588 total (295-293) to better its school
36-hole record by five strokes. The Lady Camels posted the previous
school record of 593 strokes (302-291) at the Radford Lady
Highlander Invitational, Sept. 16-17, 2002.
The
Lady Camels topped second-place Georgia State by 15 strokes to win
the 13-school event, which included eight Atlantic Sun Conference
members. The A-Sun Championship will also be played at Victoria
Hills next April.
Campbell
sophomore Alejandra Shaw carded a one-under 71 on Tuesday to finish
in a tie for second individually with Maria Engstrom of McNeese
State at one-over 145. Lisbeth Meincke of Georgia State won
individual honors at two-under 142 (72-70).
CU
freshman Camila Lopez finished sixth individually at four-over 148
(75-73), while freshman Maite Ortiz de Pinedo -- the first round
leader -- tied for seventh at 149 (69-80). Freshman Emily Simpson
tied for 12th at 153 (77-76), and junior Sofia Gorelik recovered to
place 14th at 154 with a final-round 73. Campbell sophomore Jaclyn
Perlman tied for 33rd at 163 strokes, while playing as an
individual.
Campbell,
the defending Atlantic Sun champion, returns to action next week
(Oct. 25-26) at the John Kirk Lady Panther Invitational hosted by
Georgia State.
