Hot-Shooting Belmont Defeats Campbell 102-91
NASHVILLE, TENN.
Belmont broke open a tight game with a 13-1 run midway through the
second half and the Bruins defeated Campbell 102-91 Monday
afternoon at the Curb Event Center.
Josh Goodwin led six
Belmont players in double figures with 21 points, 13 in the second
half. His three from the left corner capped a 13-1 Bruins flurry
that stretched the lead to 72-54 with 8:45 remaining.
Maurice Latham's three
brought Campbell within 59-53 with 12:26 to go, but the Camels went
the next 4:29 without a field goal as Belmont stretched the margin
to 18. Campbell went 0-for-5 from the floor and made four of its
26 turnovers during the decisive span.
Campbell (3-7, 2-1
A-Sun) was able to cut the gap to 96-88 on Smith's three with 46
seconds remaining, but dropped its fourth-straight
contest.
Belmont shot 57.9
percent (22-38) from the floor in the second half, 51.4 percent
(37-72) for the game. The Bruins made 11-of-36 threes (.306) and
finished 17-of-20 (.850) from the line, including 15-of-18 in the
final period, to offset 20 turnovers.
Brian Collins added 15
points and five assists for Belmont (4-6, 2-1), which ended a
5-game losing streak. Andrew Preston had 14 on 7-of-8 shooting,
while Justin Hare and Boomer Herndon had 12 each. Andy Wicke
scored 11.
Maurice Latham topped
with Camels with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Comerlee Poole
contributed 16, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, plus six
boards. Ledell Eackles tallied a season-high 15 points, plus six
assists and four steals. Eric Smith, who entered the game as the
A-Sun's fourth-leading scorer at better than 18 points per game,
was held to season-lows of 8 points and two three-point field
goals.
Belmont led by as many
as 11 in the first half before the Camels rallied to cut the gap.
Eackles' three from the right wing cut the Bruins' advantage to
38-33 as the period expired.
Campbell shot 43
percent for the game and made 11-of-30 threes (.367), but hit just
18-of-37 from the line (.581). The Fighting Camels held a 48-35
edge on the boards and grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, but was only
able to convert those extra opportunities to 13 points.
The Bruins won their
10th-straight in the series against Campbell, which fell to 0-6
all-time in Nashville.
Campbell continues its
two-game A-Sun trip Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. (CST) tip-off at
