Men's Soccer Set to Face Jacksonville Saturday in Atlantic Sun Final

DeLAND, FLA. – On Saturday, Campbell University will make its 11th appearance in a conference championship game as an NCAA Division I men's soccer member. The third-seeded Fighting Camels (13-5-2) will take on top-seeded Jacksonville (11-7-1) at 1:00 p.m. at the Stetson Soccer Complex. The Fighting Camels will be playing for their league's automatic berth in the NCAA men's soccer championship tournament for the sixth time.

Campbell has won four of its previous 10 league tournament title matches, most recently in 1992 when CU won its fourth Big South Conference crown. Since joining the Atlantic Sun in 1994, Campbell has reached the league final in 1995, 1996, 2005 and now again in 2007.

Campbellvs. Jacksonville

The third-seeded Camels advanced to Saturday's title game behind a 6-1 victory Wednesday over Gardner-Webb in the first round before blanking second-seeded host Stetson 2-0 on Thursday in the semifinal. Vince Petrasso scored twice against Gardner-Webb; then added another strike against Stetson, providing the game-winner each time. Richard Jata had two goals and A-Sun freshman of the year Josue Soto added a pair of assists for the Camels in the first round match. Camel keeper Aaron Johnson allowed only one goal – on a first-half penalty kick to Gardner-Webb – through 180 minutes of tournament action.

Campbell entered the tournament ranked seventh in the South Region, while Jacksonville was ranked 10th in the poll. Stefan Runeman, Jonathan Jackson and Philipp Meyner scored for the Dolphins in their 3-2 semifinal win over fourth-seeded Lipscomb.

The Dolphins also feature A-Sun player of the year Anton Axelsson, who entered the tournament as the nation's number-two goal scorer with 34 points on 15 goals and four assists.

On October 4 at Buies Creek, Campbell overcame an early deficit and rode goals from Khalil Johnson and Jason Keever to a 2-1 victory over Jacksonville. Jacksonville jumped in front in the 18th minute when Meyner drove a left-footed shot from outside the box into the upper right corner of the net. Johnson met Josue Soto's cross with a volley at the back post for his second goal of the season to tie the score with only 29 seconds remaining before half-time. Keever's first career strike put the Camels in front in the 51st minute.

Campbell leads the all-time series with the Dolphins by a 7-3-3 margin and has won the last four contests. Four of the last five games between the schools have been decided by a single goal.

November 12, 2005

Stetson 2, Campbell 1

Armante Marshall's goal in the 85th minute lifted Stetson to a 2-1 victory over Campbell in the final of the Atlantic Sun championship at Macon, Ga. The second-seeded Hatters (9-10-1), who earned the A-Sun's automatic berth in the NCAA Regional tournament, won their first title in men's soccer since joining the conference in 1985. Top-seeded Campbell (13-6-1) ended its most-successful year since 1996, the last time the Fighting Camels advanced to the A-Sun final. A-Sun Freshman of the Year Sonny Guadarrama gave the Camels the lead in the 25th minute on a header off Matt Lightner's cross. Stetson pulled level just before the half on tournament MVP Alex Minton's 23-yard touch-and-shoot free kick. Campbell twice struck the woodwork after 75 minutes of play. Matt Lightner's shot hit the left post; then shortly later, Stetson keeper Evan White parried Willy Guadarrama's shot off the left post.

November 9, 1996

Collegeof Charleston3, Campbell 2 (2OT)

Tim Sparks scored with six seconds left in the second overtime period to lift the College of Charleston to its third-straight A-Sun title with a 3-2 victory over Campbell in Charleston, S.C. The Camels twice surged in front on a 32nd minute goal by Mathew Hooker and a 64th minute strike from Aaron O'Brien, but the Cougars knotted the score in the 82nd minute through tournament MVP Damon Richvalsky.

November 11, 1995

Collegeof Charleston 4, Campbell 1

With the nation's leading goal scorer and league player of the year Toni Siikala (and his 25 goals) on the bench due to a back ailment, the Camels fell to defending A-Sun champion College of Charleston at Miami, Fla. Steven Riches scored for the Camels in the 80th minute.

November 6, 1993

UNC Greensboro 2, Campbell 1

Host UNC Greensboro ended top-seeded Campbell's season and in turn claimed the Big South Conference's first-ever men's soccer automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. UNCG jumped in front just 4:48 into the contest on Darren Powell's goal before the Camels equalized through Toni Siikala in the 42nd minute. However, the UNCG winner came with just 10 seconds remaining in the first period on Scott Thomas' header.

November 7, 1992

Campbell5, UNC Greensboro 0

Campbell won its fourth Big South Championship in dominating fashion consecutive 5-0 victories over Maryland-Baltimore County in the semifinal and against UNC Greensboro in the championship match at Rock Hill, S.C.. Tournament MVP Rami Kauppi scored four times in the semifinal, then added a goal and two assists in the championship. Pat Gross, Jack Robinson, Buddy Edwards and Brian Hunter also found the net in the final.

November 9, 1991

Campbell 4, Winthrop 0

Fourth-seeded Campbell defeated Winthrop 4-0 in a steady rain at Conway, S.C., to wrap up three-straight shutout victories and its third Big South title in six years. Ricky Mobley scored twice, while tournament MVP Rami Kauppi and Brian Hunter added goals. The Camels ousted top-seeded Radford 1-0 in the semifinal on Kauppi's strike.

November 4, 1989

Coastal Carolina 1, Campbell 0

Dean Herrity scored from the penalty spot in the 70th minute to lift top-seeded Coastal Carolina to a 1-0 victory over the Camels at Asheville, N.C. Campbell advanced to the championship by defeating Radford 2-1 in overtime in the semifinal.

November 15, 1986

Coastal Carolina 1, Campbell 0

Mike Dugan scored the game's lone goal in the 97th minute as visiting Coastal Carolina defeated Campbell 1-0 to conclude the host's first year of competition at the CU Soccer Stadium within the Eakes Athletic Complex. CU advanced to the Big South final for the third-straight season.

November 23, 1985

Campbell 3, Radford 1

Campbell built a three-goal lead through 51 minutes and went on to defeat Radford 3-1 at Conway, S.C., for its second-straight Big South Conference title. David Doyle scored twice and Jimmy Morrissey added what proved to be the winner. Defender Per Jensen was named tournament MVP.

November 10, 1984

Campbell 2, Winthrop 0

Scott Scarborough assisted on Per Jensen's 40th minute goal; then added a strike from the penalty spot just 40 seconds into the second half as Campbell claimed the inaugural Big South Conference tournament championship at Radford, Va. Midfielder David Nisbet was named tournament MVP.
