ORANGEBURG, S.C.-Kelly Weaver tossed a complete-game shutout and
Jessica Huffman went a combined 6-of-8 with two home runs to lead
Campbell to a doubleheader sweep at South Carolina State Saturday
afternoon.
The Camels (3-0-1) took the opener 7-3 behind a pair of 2-for-4
2-RBI performances from freshmen Amanda Littlejohn and Shayla
Cullum. Fellow freshman Brittany Stanley (1-0) picked up her first
career victory in the circle tossing 4 1/3 innings allowing three
runs, two earned, while striking out seven.
After South Carolina State (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning, Campbell tied the game in the top half of the
third on a single by Cullum scoring Courtney Quinn, who finished
3-for-4 on the game.
The Camels broke open the game in the fifth with three runs sparked
by an RBI-double from Cullum and a single by Cassie Webb plating
Cullum. Huffman led off the inning and stole second before
eventually scoring on a fielder' choice; through four games Huffman
has stole five bases after finishing 14th in the nation last year
with 0.54 per game.
The Bulldogs chased Stanley in the fifth inning scoring a pair of
runs on a single by Cidney Chester. Lauren Caviness relieved
Stanley and struck out six of the nine batters she faced to earn
her first save of the season.
Campbell tacked on three more runs in the sixth on Huffman's first
home run of the day and a 2-RBI double from Littlejohn scoring both
Quinn and Megan Paul.
Huffman dominated the second game from her first at-bat until her
last. The Preseason All-Conference selection went 4-for-4 from the
dish with 2 RBIs and a stolen base. The Cornelius, N.C. native led
off the game with a home run to left field tying her for second
place on the Campbell career home run list with 20.
Paul followed up the blast with a single and a stolen base before
scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Quinn.
Huffman put Campbell up 3-0 in the second inning with a single
scoring Stephenie Pappas. Olivia Ghiselli closed out the Camels'
scoring singling home Karlie Love after she led off the sixth with
a triple.
Weaver (2-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished
the game with a career-high nine strikeouts scattering just four
hits and issuing three walks.
Campbell's three pitchers combined to strikeout 22 Bulldog batters
on the afternoon and allowed just eight hits in the two games.
The Camels open the home portion of their schedule Tuesday
afternoon hosting Longwood at the Eakes Athletic Complex. First
pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
