GREENSBORO, N.C.-Lauren Caviness threw a complete-game shutout
striking out seven and yielding just four hits leading Campbell to
a 2-0 eight-inning victory over Morehead State at the UNC
Greensboro Invitational. Kent State defeated Campbell 2-0 in the
Camels first game of the tournament.
The Camels (4-1-1) broke open a scoreless game in the top of the
eighth inning with a pair of runs. Hilary Wheatly scored the first
run of the inning on a fielding error by the Eagles after starting
the inning on second base due to the tiebreaker rule. Stephenie
Pappas drove home Robin Leathers who reached on the error to put
Campbell up 2-0.
Caviness (1-0) tossed all eight innings for the Camels for her
first victory of the season. With her seven strikeouts, she is 108
shy of the Campbell career record.
CU's Jessica Huffman broke up Kari Quinn's no-hit bid with a
two-out single in the top of the sixth inning and then stole her
second base of the game moving into scoring position. Quinn
recorded the ninth of her 13 strikeouts to get out of the
inning.
Campbell had another chance in the top of the seventh after
freshman Shayla Cullum doubled and moved to third on a passed ball.
But just like she had done all game, Quinn recorded a strikeout to
get out of the inning.
The Camels got out of jams in the second and third innings thanks
to solid play from Amanda Littlejohn behind the plate. Morehead
State had runners on first and third with just one out in both
innings and the freshman catcher threw out two Eagle runners trying
to steal second base; she threw out three runners on the game.
The Eagles put runners on first and second in the fourth inning
with just one out and Caviness bucked down and struck out the next
two batters to get of out another two-on one-out situation.
Quinn (0-1) took the loss for Morehead despite allowing just two
hits and no walks to go along with her 13 strikeouts. The Eagles
were plagued with poor defense committing three errors on the
game.
In the opening game, Jamie Fitzpatrick accounted for the majority
of Kent State's (2-0) offense going 3-for-3 with both of the teams
RBIs. She put the Golden Flashes on the board in the bottom on the
first with a double scoring Jessica Toocheck who reached on a
walk.
Fitzpatrick hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to set the
final score.
Campbell struggled from the plate recording just two hits, a first
inning single by Megan Paul and a seventh inning double from
Cullum.
Kylie Reyonlds (1-0) pitched a complete game in the circle for
Kent State striking out 16 Camel batters without allowing a walk.
At one point, Reynolds struck out 11 in a row and closed the game
by recording 15 of the final 18 outs via the strikeout.
Kelly Weaver (2-1) took the loss for Campbell going the distance
with three strikeouts.
The Camels wrap up play at the UNC Greensboro Invitational
tomorrow with games against the host Spartans at 2:30 and Ohio at
4:30.
