BURLINGTON, N.C.-Campbell split the
opening day of the Elon Invitational Friday afternoon defeating
North Carolina A&T 9-1 in six innings after dropping the opener
6-0 to the Big East Conference's Connecticut.
The Camels (7-4-1) pounded out 13 hits
against the Aggies (2-5) and jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first
inning sending 13 batters to the plate. Campbell's first seven
batters reached base safely.
Shayla Cullum,
Karlie Love and
Courtney Quinn delivered
the big shots of the inning each with 2-RBI base hits. Cullum
finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate and Love finished
2-for-4.
Hilary Wheatley's first
career hit in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Cullum to close
out the Camels scoring.
North Carolina A&T scored its lone
run of the game in the fifth inning when starting pitcher Adia Dial
brought home Yahamma White.
Lauren Caviness (3-1) stuck
out seven batters and scattered just four hits in the win for
Campbell allowing just the one unearned run. Dial (1-2) took the
loss allowing seven runs, five earned, on four hits and three walks
without recording an out. Sasha Philpot relieved her in first
inning and allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits in six
innings.
In the opener, UConn (1-0) took advantage
of three Campbell errors and used a solid pitching effort by Tricia
Sullivan (1-0) to win its season opener.
Quinn recorded two of Campbell's three
hits in the ballgame, while Huffman led off the game with a double
for the other.
The Huskies got on the board with a solo
home run in the second inning by Lauren Cecchi. They plated a pair
of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and a single run in the
seventh.
Sullivan walked four and struck out eight
in the victory, while
Kelly Weaver (3-2) took the
loss allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits in 5.1 innings.
Brittany Stanley tossed the
final 1.2 innings allowing an unearned run on two hits.
The Camels continue play of the round
robin tournament Saturday against another Big East opponent Rutgers
at 12:00. Campbell will play
