South Carolina Sweeps Doubleheader from Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-South Carolina pitchers combined for 24 strikeouts as the Gamecocks swept a doubleheader from Campbell Wednesday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex winning the opener 1-0 and taking the nightcap 3-0.

In the opener, South Carolina's (15-2) Melissa Hendon (4-1) dominated in the circle and helped her own cause from the plate with her first career home run on a 1-0 offering from Lauren Caviness/> in the top of the second inning. Hendon struck out 14 batters scattering two hits without allowing a walk to pick up the win.

Brittany Stanley/> broke up Hendon's no-hit bid with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Hendon had struck out five-straight Camels (8-8-1) before Stanley's hit.

Lauren Caviness/> (3-3) tossed a gem in the circle for the Camels allowing just the one run on four hits with four strikeouts and just one walk throwing all seven innings, but suffered the loss.

The opening game was the third-consecutive one-run game in the series. The Gamecocks took a pair of one-run games (3-2, 5-4) last year in Columbia, S.C.

The Gamecocks put a pair of runs on the board in the fourth inning of game two taking advantage of a pair of Campbell errors. McKenna Hughes led off the inning reaching on a walk. Cagney Davis came in to run for Hughes and moved to third on a stolen base and Camel throwing error. Davis completed her trek around the bases scoring Campbell fielding error. Jacqueline Wetherbee grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded scoring Jessica Jonker who was on third.

Hughes belted her sixth home run of the season in the top of the fifth extending the South Carolina lead to 3-0.

Kelly Weaver/> (3-4) tossed the complete game for the Camels allowing all three runs, two earned, scattering seven hits and striking out seven.

Kate Pouliot (9-0) kept her perfect record intact with the complete game shutout. She struck out 10 Campbell batters yielding just four hits and didn't walk anyone.

The Camels travel to Charleston, S.C. for eight-straight games beginning Friday night with Providence at 5:00 in the Charleston Southern Invitational. Campbell then takes on Bowling Green at 7:00 and conclude the opening day with the host Buccaneers at 9:00.
