GREENVILLE, S.C.-Jessica Huffman went a combined 3-for-7 with
three stolen bases and three runs scored, and Courtney Quinn was a
combined 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs as Campbell defeated
Furman 5-3 in the opening game of the twinbill and the second game
finished in a 3-3 tie due to darkness at Pepsi Stadium.
The tie in game two is just the third in Campbell history and first
since 1998.
Campbell combined for eight stolen bases in the two games, with two
apiece for Megan Paul and Stephenie Pappas to go along with
Huffman's three; Pappas finished 3-for-6 from the plate.
The Camels (1-0-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first five
innings in the opener. Quinn got things started with a two-run
homer in the first inning that traveled 260 feet to left center.
The Glencoe, Ala. native extended the lead to 4-0 in the third
inning with a 2-RBI single driving in Huffman, who singled and put
herself into scoring position with her second stolen base of the
game, and Paul after she reached on a walk.
Freshman Amanda Littlejohn plated the Camels final run of the game
with a single to centerfield plating Huffman for the third time of
the game. Huffman stole second base each time she got on base in
the opener; the senior All Atlantic Sun honoree finished 14th in
the nation last season averaging 0.54 stolen bases per game.
Furman (0-1-1) scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning on a three-run home run by Stephanie Cushing.
Senior Kelly Weaver (1-0) picked up the win for the Camels allowing
all three runs, two earned, in 5 1/3 inning of work. The southpaw
yielded just three hits and didn't walk any batters while striking
out two. Freshman Brittany Stanley earned a save throwing the final
1 2/3 innings allowing one hit with three strikeouts. Blake Murray
(0-1) went the distance for Furman allowing five earned runs on
seven hits with six strikeouts.
The Paladins rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning in the
night cap to salvage the 3-3 tie. Meredith Mielke tripled to open
the inning and later scored on an RBI single by Amber Kiser. The
Camels had Mielke dead to rights at third base, but the throw from
the outfield hit her in the back allowing her to pull off the
triple.
Huffman put Campbell up 1-0 in the second inning blasting a single
back up the middle driving home Robin Leathers, who led off the
inning with a walk.
Furman took its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of third
inning on a Campbell throwing error and a RBI double by
Cushing.
The Camels took a 3-2 lead with an pinch-hit RBI-single from
freshman Cassie Webb scoring Quinn, , a junior college transfer
from Okaloosa-Walton Community College, in the sixth inning and
Pappas scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning after moving
herself up the base path with a stolen base.
Lauren Caviness (0-0) struck out seven going the distance in the
circle for the Camels. Caviness set the Campbell single-season
strikeout record last season with 166 and is just 120 off the
career record. Vanessa Williams threw the first six innings for
Furman, while Lana Mackey tossed the final inning.
The Camels stay in the Palmetto State for a doubleheader at South
