BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Behind a pair of big
innings, College of Charleston swept a doubleheader from Campbell
Wednesday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Cougars
used a three-run sixth inning in game one to pull away for a 5-2
victory and used a four-run fourth in the nightcap en route to a
5-1 win.
The Cougars (14-14) got on the board in
the first inning with a two-run homer down the right field line by
Kristie Shifflett scoring Izmena Cabrera who led off the game
drawing a walk.
The Camels (16-16-1) answered with a
single run in the bottom half of the opening inning with Jessica
Huffman scoring on a passed ball. Huffman drew a lead-off walk and
moved to second on one of her two stolen bases on the day; she now
has 99 for her career. Following the stolen base, Megan Paul laid
down a sac bunt moving Huffman to third.
Jennifer Golden threw the knockout punch
in the sixth inning with a three-run home run to left-center.
Amber Shifflett and her sister Kristie led of the inning with
back-to-back singles setting up the blast by Golden.
As they did in the first inning, the
Camels responded to the Cougars runs with one of their own in the
bottom half of the sixth. Courtney Quinn hit her fourth homer of
the season with a shot to dead-away center field closing the gap to
5-2.
Terri Mesko (7-5) pitched a complete game
for College of Charleston striking out seven while scattering seven
hits. Lauren Caviness (7-8) suffered the loss for Campbell
allowing all five runs on five hits. The southpaw struck out five
before handing the ball over the Kelly Weaver who tossed the final
two innings yielding a pair of hits.
In the nightcap, the Cougars wasted no
time getting on the board scoring the in top of the first with a
sacrifice fly from Golden scoring Cabrera, who led off the game
with a single.
Shayla Cullum tied the game in the bottom
of the first inning with the fourth home run of her freshman
campaign to straight-away center field.
Brittany Small put the Cougars back on
top in the top of the fourth with a triple to deep right field
scoring Golden and Katie Pesature. Kolby Schooley brought home
Small with a single to left increasing the lead to 4-1. Golden put
College of Charleston up 5-1 with a double to right in the top of
the fifth inning scoring Kristie Shifflett who began the two-out
rally with a single.
Campbell threatened in the bottom of the
fifth inning loading the bases with just one out. Mesko relieved
Katie Sansouci and set down the next two batters to end the threat
for her first save of the season.
Sansouci (4-2) earned the win for the
Cougars tossing 4 1/3 innings allowing just one runs on three hits;
she struck out three Campbell batters. Brittany Stanley (6-3)
suffered the loss for the Camels allowing four runs on five hits
with one strikeout. Weaver entered in relief again tossing the
final three innings allowing a single run on a pair of hits.
Campbell opens Atlantic Sun play this
weekend in the River City taking on Jacksonville on Friday and
North Florida on Saturday.
