Softball Splits Doubleheader at Jacksonville to Open A-Sun Play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-Lauren Caviness tossed her fourth shutout of the season leading Campbell to a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville in the A-Sun opener for both schools. The Dolphins rallied from down 8-0 in game two of the doubleheader to win 11-10 and salvage the split.

Freshman Amanda Littlejohn led Campbell (17-17-1, 1-1 A-Sun) at the plate in the opener going 3-for-4 and scoring three times. Fellow freshman Brittany Stanley went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Caviness (8-8) struck out eight batters giving her 100 on the season and 369 for her career; she needs just 28 more strikeouts to set the Campbell career record.

The Dolphins (7-24, 1-1) were held without a hit for the first 2 2/3 innings of the game and finished with just four on the game.

Littlejohn led off the second inning with a single back up the middle. Karlie Love then drew a walk and Stanley singled to left-center scoring Littlejohn from second. Hilary Wheatley delivered her fifth RBI of the season with a single to center scoring Robin Leathers, who came in to run for Love.

After the first two Campbell batters flew out to left in the third, Littlejohn reached with a single to left and came around to score on a single from Love.

Littlejohn scored her third run of the game in the fifth stretching the lead to 4-0. After leading off the inning with an infield single, she moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the Dolphins second baseman.

The final run of the game came courtesy of another Jacksonville error in the sixth inning with Courtney Quinn crossing on an error by the shortstop after reaching on a two-out double.

Katie Buell (2-6) took the loss for the Dolphins allowing three runs in 2 2/3 innings on five hits. Shannon Jensen tossed the final 4 1/3 innings allowing two unearned runs on three hits.

The Camels jumped out to their 8-0 lead in game two with three runs in the first, four in the second and one in the third. Shayla Cullum (2-for-4) picked up the first of four RBIs in the second game singling home Jessica Huffman.

Huffman led off the game drawing a walk, stealing second and moving to third on a sacrifice by Megan Paul. Huffman has now stolen 20-consecutive bases on the season and has 31 through the Camels 35 games. Her steal in the first inning of game one was the 100th of her career.

Quinn kept the rally going with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Paul and Cullum later scored on another error by the shortstop.

Cullum blasted her team-leading fifth home run in the second inning scoring Stephenie Pappas and Huffman, who both reached via a walk. Following a pitching change, Quinn walked and came home to score on an RBI groundout by Love.

Pappas reached on an error by the Jacksonville second baseman in the third and scored on Huffman's 11th double of the season.

The Dolphins began their rally in the bottom of the third plating three runs on just one hit, a lead-off single by Valerie Alter. All three runs in the inning were unearned due to an error by Campbell's starting pitcher Kelly Weaver.

Jacksonville pulled within one at 8-7 with a four spot in the bottom of the fourth inning with a grand slam off the bat on Patricia Melo.

The Camels extended their lead to 9-7 in the fifth with an RBI single by Paul scoring Huffman who hit a two-out triple.

The Dolphins tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings with an RBI single from Renee LaCroix and an RBI double from Ashley Mora.
