JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-Lauren Caviness
tossed her fourth shutout of the season leading Campbell to a 5-0
victory over Jacksonville in the A-Sun opener for both schools. The
Dolphins rallied from down 8-0 in game two of the doubleheader to
win 11-10 and salvage the split.
Freshman Amanda
Littlejohn led Campbell (17-17-1, 1-1 A-Sun) at the plate in the
opener going 3-for-4 and scoring three times. Fellow freshman
Brittany Stanley went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Caviness
(8-8) struck out eight batters giving her 100 on the season and 369
for her career; she needs just 28 more strikeouts to set the
Campbell career record.
The Dolphins (7-24,
1-1) were held without a hit for the first 2 2/3 innings of the
game and finished with just four on the game.
Littlejohn led off the
second inning with a single back up the middle. Karlie Love then
drew a walk and Stanley singled to left-center scoring Littlejohn
from second. Hilary Wheatley delivered her fifth RBI of the season
with a single to center scoring Robin Leathers, who came in to run
for Love.
After the first two
Campbell batters flew out to left in the third, Littlejohn reached
with a single to left and came around to score on a single from
Love.
Littlejohn scored her
third run of the game in the fifth stretching the lead to 4-0.
After leading off the inning with an infield single, she moved to
second on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the Dolphins
second baseman.
The final run of the
game came courtesy of another Jacksonville error in the sixth
inning with Courtney Quinn crossing on an error by the shortstop
after reaching on a two-out double.
Katie Buell (2-6) took
the loss for the Dolphins allowing three runs in 2 2/3 innings on
five hits. Shannon Jensen tossed the final 4 1/3 innings allowing
two unearned runs on three hits.
The Camels jumped out
to their 8-0 lead in game two with three runs in the first, four in
the second and one in the third. Shayla Cullum (2-for-4) picked up
the first of four RBIs in the second game singling home Jessica
Huffman.
Huffman led off the
game drawing a walk, stealing second and moving to third on a
sacrifice by Megan Paul. Huffman has now stolen 20-consecutive
bases on the season and has 31 through the Camels 35 games. Her
steal in the first inning of game one was the 100th of
her career.
Quinn kept the rally
going with a single through the left side of the infield scoring
Paul and Cullum later scored on another error by the shortstop.
Cullum blasted her
team-leading fifth home run in the second inning scoring Stephenie
Pappas and Huffman, who both reached via a walk. Following a
pitching change, Quinn walked and came home to score on an RBI
groundout by Love.
Pappas reached on an
error by the Jacksonville second baseman in the third and scored on
Huffman's 11th double of the season.
The Dolphins began
their rally in the bottom of the third plating three runs on just
one hit, a lead-off single by Valerie Alter. All three runs in the
inning were unearned due to an error by Campbell's starting pitcher
Kelly Weaver.
Jacksonville pulled
within one at 8-7 with a four spot in the bottom of the fourth
inning with a grand slam off the bat on Patricia Melo.
The Camels extended
their lead to 9-7 in the fifth with an RBI single by Paul scoring
Huffman who hit a two-out triple.
The Dolphins tied the
game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings with an RBI
single from Renee LaCroix and an RBI double from Ashley Mora.
Wheatley scored on a
passed ball in the top of the seventh inning giving Campbell a 10-9
lead with just three outs remaining for Jacksonville.
Jensen opened the
bottom of the seventh with a single to left and moved to second on
a sac bunt by LaCroix. Kelly McKeon tied the game with a double to
left and scored the winning run on a two-out single by Jillian
Mirante.
Jensen (2-9) picked up
the win throwing the final 5 2/3 innings allowing four runs, two
earned, on five hits. Ashley Iveson started the game in the circle
for Jacksonville lasting just 1 1/3 innings allowing six runs, four
earned, on three hits.
Weaver (3-6) suffered
the loss allowing all 11 runs, just eight earned, on 14 hits.
Campbell stays in the
River City for a doubleheader at North Florida Saturday afternoon
beginning at 1:00 pm.
