ELON, N.C. - Campbell split a
nonconference doubleheader Elon Thursday night at East Field. The
Camels took game one 5-4 in the before falling 5-1 in the second
contest. Junior southpaw Lauren Caviness struck out the side in the
fifth inning of game two to become Campbell's all-time strikeout
leader with 398 in her career passing Kathy Freaney who finished
her career with 396.
The first game remained scoreless through the first three innings
until Campbell put a run on the board in the top of the fourth
inning. With a runner on second base, Jessica Huffman singled to
right field to score Courtney Quinn and give the Fighting Camels a
1-0 lead.
Campbell (20-24-1)added another run in the top of the fifth when
pitcher Brittany Stanley helped her cause with a solo home run out
of left centerfield.
Elon (19-15) responded in the bottom of the frame when a single by
Debbie Zeigler sent Tracey Dahlen home to cut the lead to one,
2-1.
Campbell used three runs in the top of sixth inning to take a 5-1
lead. Huffman doubled and Ashley Jones knocked a single before
Hilary Wheatley doubled down the right field line to plate Huffman
and put Campbell up 3-1. Shayla Cullum then knocked a two-RBI
single to left field to put the Fighting Camels ahead 5-1.
Elon tallied three runs of its own in the bottom half of the
inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Paige Goss
doubled to score Jaymie Shanahan. Dahlen then doubled to right
centerfield to plate Goss and Patti Weber and cut the lead to one
at 5-4.
Stanley (8-5) earned the win for the Fighting Camels after
throwing 5.2 innings and giving up four runs on eight hits and
striking out four batters. Caviness tossed 1.1 innings in relief to
earn her third save of the season after giving up no runs on no
hits. Melanie Helterbran (10-5) suffered the loss for the Phoenix
after hurling 5.1 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits
and retiring one batter. Samantha Schroeder threw 1.2 innings in
relief and gave up two runs on three hits while striking out three
batters.
Cullum led Campbell at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI while
Huffman added two hits. Dahlen was 2-for-2 from the plate with two
RBI and one run scored for the Phoenix. Zeigler and Smith each
added two hits while Zeigler and Goss each posted one RBI.
In the second game, Elon started the scoring early with two runs
in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded,
Helterbran singled up the middle to plate Dahlen and Goss and give
Elon a 2-0 lead.
Elon put another run on the board in the bottom of the third
inning. Zeigler doubled to start the inning before Jaimie Rao
knocked a single up the middle to score Zeigler and put Elon ahead
3-0.
The Fighting Camels responded with a run in the top of the fourth
inning. With runners on second and third, Quinn hit a sacrifice fly
to left field to score Megan Paul and cut the lead to two at
3-1.
Elon posted a run in the bottom half of the inning when Brandi
Jones led off with a solo homer out of left field to give the
Phoenix a 4-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jones singled to right
centerfield and moved to second a sac-bunt by Shanahan before
advancing to third on a wild pitch. Goss then ripped a single
through the left side to send Jones home and give Elon a 5-1
lead.
Carol Lilley (8-7) earned the win for Elon after throwing a
complete game and giving up one run (no earned runs) on three hits
while striking out five batters. Caviness (9-13) suffered the loss
after tossing six innings and giving up five runs on four hits
while retiring seven batters.
Goss led Elon from the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run and one
RBI. Jones went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and one
RBI while Helterbran posted two RBI. Huffman was 2-for-3 from the
plate for Campbell and Amanda Littlejohn posted the other hit for
the Fighting Camels.
Campbell remains out of conference on Saturday when it travels to
Coastal Carolina for a pair of games.
