Campbell's football team (1-5, 0-3 PFL) fell to Pioneer
Football League rival Dayton (4-1, 1-0 PFL) on Saturday, Oct. 4 at
Welcome Stadium by a 42-0 score. Campbell's Donte'
Washington had a two interception performance to lead the
Camels. For Dayton, Ben Shappie ran for
five scores to lead the Flyers effort.
Dayton got on the board first on a seven-yard
run from Shappie to cap off a four-play 53 yard drive, key by a
32-yard reception from Justin Watkins.
The made extra point from Nick Glavin
gave the Flyers a 7-0 lead with 3:10 left in the first quarter.
After a few stalled drives from both sides,
CU's Washington thwarted a Dayton drive with his fourth
interception of the season and the first of the game with 10:46
left in the second quarter.
After another UD defensive stop, the Dayton
offense marched down the field on a four-play 45- yard drive ending
in a Justin Millio 18-yard touchdown
reception from Rob Florian to take a 14-0
after the made extra point from Glavin with 8:07 left in the
half.
Dayton's Ben Shappie
continued to work on UD's next drive with a one-yard touchdown run
making the score 21-0 after the made Glavin extra point. The drive
covered six plays and 59 yards.
Dayton's offense continued to drive and moved
the ball all the way to the Campbell 24-yard line before
Washington's second pick of the game kept the margin to 21-0 at the
break.
After the break, Campbell's defensive backs
continued to play well with Brandon Chandler
picking off the Florian attempt for CU's third interception of the
game and his first of his career.
Shappie scored his third touchdown on the game
on the ensuing UD drive with a made Glavin extra point to make the
score 28-0 with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter
(9:22).
The bruising running back Shappie added a
fourth rushing score, this one from 21-yards, to extend the Dayton
advantage to 35-0 with 6:16 left in the third quarter.
Shappie's fifth rushing touchdown of the game,
a three-yard run, made the score 42-0 and tied the Dayton school
record with 1:35 left in the third quarter.
Milton Brown
recorded a game-high 13 tackles for CU. Washington also had 10
tackles in the loss.
Campbell now returns home to Barker-Lane
Stadium to take on PFL rival Butler (2-1, 1-0 PFL) at 12 p.m. on
Oct. 11.
