BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Campbell's
football team (1-9, 0-7 PFL) lost their home season finale
to Valparaiso(3-7, 2-5 PFL) on Saturday, Nov. 15 by a 47-14
margin at Barker-Lane Stadium .
Freshman
Brandon Chandler charged up the crowd on
the opening kick returning it 86 yards for a touchdown and giving
Campbell their first lead since the Carthage game (Sept. 27) with
14:47 left in the first quarter. For Campbell it was the first
kickoff return for a touchdown in the modern era.
Valpo
continued their season long streak of scoring on the opening drive
and marched down the field on an eight play 46-yard drive that
culminated in a 23-yard field goal from Andrej
Skiba. This was the seventh time in 10 games that the
Crusaders have scored on their opening drive.
The
Crusader's Ross Wiemer punched it in from
nine yards out to start the second quarter and give Valparaiso a
10-7 lead after the made extra point from Skiba. For Weimer it was
his 10th touchdown of the season.
The game
remained the same going into the half, although Campbell drove down
to the Valparaiso six-yard line before turning it over on a Matt Vollono interception.
Skiba
pushed in his second field goal attempt of the game, this one from
27 yards, to Valpo a 13-7 lead with 11:42 left in the third
quarter.
Valpo's
defense quickly got into the scoring as Anthony
Curry picked off the errant pass attempt from Vollono and
returned it 38 yards for a touchdown to give the Crusaders a 20-7
lead. For Curry it was his league-leading sixth pick of the
season.
Another
Crusaders interception, this one by Kyle
Himmelwright quickly turned into more points for the Valpo
offense as Matt Upshaw hit Desmond Lewis in the back of the end zone to extend the
advantage to 27-7 after the made Skiba extra
point.
The Valpo
special team's got into the scoring next with John
Popper returning the Ted Moore
punt 48 yards for a touchdown. The ensuing extra point was made by
Skiba to give Valparaiso a 34-7 lead.
The
offense continued for Valpo as Jake Riedel pushed it in from the
two to finish off a 50-yard drive and give the Crusaders a 41-7
advantage.
The
Campbell offense made the score 41-14 on 14-yard touchdown run from
C.J. Oates and
the made extra point from Adam Willets
with 8:46 left in the fourth quarter.
Valpp
scored their final touchdown of the game on Josh
Regent-Smith's 10-yard run. The extra point failed but
Valparaiso still extended the lead to 47-14.
For the
game the Camels were outgained 381 to 158. Oates led the Campbell
offensive attack with 34 yards rushing. Carl
Smith had a team-best 43 yards receiving. Weimer for Valpo
ran for a game-high 148 yards.
Campbell plays its final
game of the 2008 season against Morehead State on November 22 at
1p.m. in Morehead, Kentucky.
