HIGH POINT, N.C.- Campbell baseball dropped a 20-13 decision to the
High Point Panthers Tuesday
evening at George S. Erath Field.
Campbell (2-1, 0-0 A-Sun) and High Point (3-1, 0-0 Big South) had a
combined 34 hits and 33 runs.
Randy Schwartz paced High Point collecting four hits and five
RBI. In addition to
Schwartz, who was a triple shy of the cycle, the Panthers had six
other players have multi-hit performances.
Mike Causey led the Fighting Camels going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brandon Scott, Zach Johnson and
Stephen Parsons had two hits apiece.
Carlton Floyd (0-1) one of seven Campbell pitchers to throw
took the loss for the Camels going one inning and giving up
five runs, three of which were earned, while High Point's Mike
Caldwell (1-0) earned the victory allowing eight earned runs over
5.1 innings of work in his collegiate debut.
Campbell chased a one-run first inning with a three-run top of the
second after Brandon Scott stroked a two-run homer to give the
Camels an early 4-0 lead.
Singles by Stephen Parsons and Mike Causey set the stage for
Scott's second homer of the season, matching his 2007 season
total.
Campbell's early four run lead didn't hold long as High Point
posted nine runs in the bottom of the second and plated at least
one run in each of the next six innings. In the bottom of the second the
Panthers saw eight different players score runs, including two by
Randy Schwartz.
After High Point delivered a five run bottom of the fifth,
highlighted by a home run by Schwartz and doubles by Max Fulginiti
and Alfie Wheeler, Campbell answered with six runs in the top half
of the sixth cutting the deficit to 16-12. A pair of walks and a hit batter by
Ryan Hamme, Floyd and Brian Gana would load the bases and set the
stage for shortstop Johnson. Johnson, a sophomore from Smithfield,
N.C., blasted Campbell's first triple of the season in the
right-center gap to put the Camels within reach.
High Point added its final blow scoring two runs in the bottom of
the eighth inning. Pablo
Rosario and Robby Kuzdale led the inning off with singles only to
be knocked on a single by Jeff Cowan. Cowan went 2-for-5 with two RBI and
three runs scored.
High Point out-hit the Camels 22-12 undoubtedly both teams
most explosive offensive output of the season en route to
its third straight victory.
Campbell returns home on Friday, Feb. 29 to face A-Sun foe Mercer
in its first league series of the season. The first pitch is slated for 3
p.m.
