Box Score
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Campbell's football team (0-2) fell to
Methodist (1-0) 32-21 in their second game of the season at Monarch
Stadium on Sept. 6. The game was highlighted by CU's first three
touchdowns of the season, which all came in the last 15:32 of game
time.
The Monarchs got on the board first on the 36-yard field goal from
Mario
Miralles to take a 3-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the
first quarter. After a three-and-out for the Camels, Methodist's
Chris Smith
then blocked the punt attempt to put the team deep in Campbell
territory with a prime scoring opportunity. Just as the CU defense
had stiffened, a false start on the field goal attempt gave the
Monarchs a first down. Methodist kept the drive going and it was
capped off by a 22-yard field goal from Miralles to take a 6-0
lead.
Miralles knocked in his third field goal of the first half, a
27-yard attempt, to give MU a 9-0 advantage with 11:09 left in the
second quarter. The Campbell defense played well from that point on
and held the Monarchs' offense scoreless for the rest of the half,
but the CU offense was also held scoreless and could only muster 84
yards in total offense with Carl Smith getting 54 of
those on the ground.
Campbell's offense had a strong start in the second half and
marched all the way to Methodist 17 yard line on a 12 play 53-yard
drive, before a botched snap stalled the drive and forced CU to
turn the ball over on downs. Methodist's then took over and put
together a nine play 43-yard drive of their own with Miralles
finishing it with a 43 yarder through the uprights for a 12-0
advantage with 5:11 left in the third quarter.
Another Campbell special teams miscue cost them a touchdown with
Danny Burback
recovering a botched snap of a punt attempt in the CU end zone with
4:12 left in the third quarter to give MU a commanding 19-0
lead.
The Methodist scoring continued on Campbell's next drive with
Antonio
Bartee picking off a Wesley Snow attempt and
returning it 39 yards for a touchdown to give Methodist a 25-0
advantage.
The Campbell offense answered with a touchdown of their own on a
2-yard run from Smith with 00:29 left in the third quarter. For CU
it was their first touchdown of the young season.
Methodist would add a Corey McGuire touchdown run
early in the fourth quarter to make the score 32-7 with just over
10 minutes (10:21) left in the game.
CU
received its first passing touchdown of the season when Matt Vollono was able
to hook up with Harrison Jordan on an
18-yard pass with 5:49 left in the fourth quarter. Campbell now was
feeling some momentum and after a defensive stop marched down the
field and tallied their third touchdown of the afternoon on the
1-yard Reshaun
Brown scamper to make the score 32-21.
The Camels would put together one last ditch effort and got all the
way down to the Methodist 24 before turning the ball over on
downs.
Vollono had a solid performance for Campbell, going 21-for-39 for
252 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Kelvin Murphy continued to
impress with four catches for 63 yards. Smith ran for 71 yards on
15 carries. Methodist was led by McGuire's 91 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Eric
Teague had a solid all-around with 60 yards on the ground
and 100 yards through the air for MU.
Campbell will open Pioneer Football League play and travels to
Jacksonville, Fla. to take on the Dolphins on Sept. 13 at 1
p.m.
Head Coach Dale
Steele's Quote:
"Obviously we are disappointed, but we did learn some things about
our football team. This team continued to fight throughout the
entire game, even when they were down. We saw many things we can
build on from this game, we will just need to go and execute better
against Jacksonville."
