BUIES CREEK,
N.C.--Campbell University
kicked off its
first football season since 1950 on Aug. 30, 2008 and generated
excitement on campus and in the region while also providing a
number of notable accomplishments in its inaugural NCAA Football
Championship Subdivision campaign.
The
excitement generated by the return of football to Buies Creek was
most evident at the turnstiles, where Campbell's first-year program
ranked third among the nine Pioneer Football League schools in home
game attendance with an average of 3,682 spectators per date.
CU's
opening day crowd of 5,845 stood as the second-highest single-game
home attendance figure among the PFL membership.
Two
Camels were recognized on the PFL all-conference teams, while
Charles Fiore
gained first-team Academic All-District 3 honors from the College
Sports Information Directors of America. Fiore also was a first
team Academic All-PFL selection.
Milton
Brown, a redshirt
freshman from Havelock, N.C., captured first-team PFL honors, while
Brandon
Chandler, a freshman from Kernersville, N.C., was an
honorable mention All-PFL selection.
Brown
played in all 11 games with 10 starts and led the team with 85
tackles to rank sixth in the PFL. His 48 solo stops were tied for third
in the conference. Brown
also ranked second on the team and eighth in the league with three
interceptions.
He
reached double figures in tackles three times, including a
season-best 13 stops at Dayton. Brown picked off three passes and
returned two for touchdowns -- including a 99-yard game clincher --
in Campbell's 36-27 win Sept. 25 at Carthage College. In addition, he was named the Pioneer
Football League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27 and earned
a spot in Sports
Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd feature.
Chandler
led
the team with 436 all-purpose yards including a team-high 393 as a
kickoff returner. His 54
tackles were fourth-most on the team and 12th among PFL defensive
backs. Chandler tied his
career best with eight tackles against Davidson.
He
also tallied two interceptions and had three pass breakups on the
campaign. To cap off his
outstanding season Chandler returned the opening kick on Nov. 15
against Valparaiso 86 yards for a touchdown. The kickoff return was
the first time a CU player accomplished the feat at the NCAA
Division I level.
In
addition to the accomplishments of Brown and Chandler, a number of
other Camels ranked among the Pioneer Football League statistical
leaders in 2008.
Freshman
Donte'
Washington of Gastonia, N.C., led the PFL and ranked
second in the nation among all FCS players with six interceptions
in nine games (0.67 per outing). He twice picked off two passes in a
game against San Diego and at Dayton, and ranked sixth among
PFL leaders in passes defended (1.11 per game).
Ted
Moore, a freshman
from Wilmington, N.C., finished third among PFL punters with a 37.9
average. Redshirt freshman
Adam Willets
of Gibsonville, N.C., tied for first among PFL place kickers in
field goal percentage, hitting all five of his attempts.
Sophomore
quarterback Matt
Vollono from Annapolis, Md., completed 85 of 180 passes
for 909 yards (82.6 per game) and three touchdowns. Freshman Wesley Snow of Florence,
S.C., also had three TD tosses.
Redshirt
freshman running back C.J. Oates led Camel
rushers with 364 yards on 101 attempts. His 143 rushing yards at Carthage
College ranked as the eighth-highest single-game performance in the
PFL during 2008.
Carl
Smith, a redshirt
freshman running back from Pinetops, N.C., recorded Campbell's
first 100-yard rushing effort on the NCAA level with a 109-yard
performance against Birmingham Southern on opening day. He logged 276 rushing yards on 80
carries (3.5 per attempt) for the year.
Kelvin
Murphy, a freshman
wide out from Greensboro, N.C., topped CU in receiving with 20
receptions for 226 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Paul Constantine of
Raleigh, N.C., led the Camels with three TD catches on the
year.
Jeremiah
Robinson led the defense
with 2.5 sacks and ranked second on the team with five stops for
loss. Defensively redshirt freshmen safeties Christian Dixon and Stephen Goldsmith had
productive seasons in the starting all 11 games in the secondary,
while ranking second (67) and third (57) on the team in tackles,
respectively.
Campbell
finished its
first season on the Division I level with a 1-10 overall record,
0-8 in the PFL.
