2008 Football Season In Review

BUIES CREEK, N.C.--Campbell University kicked off its first football season since 1950 on Aug. 30, 2008 and generated excitement on campus and in the region while also providing a number of notable accomplishments in its inaugural NCAA Football Championship Subdivision campaign.

The excitement generated by the return of football to Buies Creek was most evident at the turnstiles, where Campbell's first-year program ranked third among the nine Pioneer Football League schools in home game attendance with an average of 3,682 spectators per date.

CU's opening day crowd of 5,845 stood as the second-highest single-game home attendance figure among the PFL membership.

Two Camels were recognized on the PFL all-conference teams, while Charles Fiore gained first-team Academic All-District 3 honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America. Fiore also was a first team Academic All-PFL selection.

Milton Brown, a redshirt freshman from Havelock, N.C., captured first-team PFL honors, while Brandon Chandler, a freshman from Kernersville, N.C., was an honorable mention All-PFL selection.

Brown played in all 11 games with 10 starts and led the team with 85 tackles to rank sixth in the PFL. His 48 solo stops were tied for third in the conference. Brown also ranked second on the team and eighth in the league with three interceptions.

He reached double figures in tackles three times, including a season-best 13 stops at Dayton. Brown picked off three passes and returned two for touchdowns -- including a 99-yard game clincher -- in Campbell's 36-27 win Sept. 25 at Carthage College. In addition, he was named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27 and earned a spot in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd feature.

Chandler led the team with 436 all-purpose yards including a team-high 393 as a kickoff returner. His 54 tackles were fourth-most on the team and 12th among PFL defensive backs. Chandler tied his career best with eight tackles against Davidson.

He also tallied two interceptions and had three pass breakups on the campaign. To cap off his outstanding season Chandler returned the opening kick on Nov. 15 against Valparaiso 86 yards for a touchdown. The kickoff return was the first time a CU player accomplished the feat at the NCAA Division I level.

In addition to the accomplishments of Brown and Chandler, a number of other Camels ranked among the Pioneer Football League statistical leaders in 2008.

Freshman Donte' Washington of Gastonia, N.C., led the PFL and ranked second in the nation among all FCS players with six interceptions in nine games (0.67 per outing). He twice picked off two passes in a game – against San Diego and at Dayton, and ranked sixth among PFL leaders in passes defended (1.11 per game).

Ted Moore, a freshman from Wilmington, N.C., finished third among PFL punters with a 37.9 average. Redshirt freshman Adam Willets of Gibsonville, N.C., tied for first among PFL place kickers in field goal percentage, hitting all five of his attempts.

Sophomore quarterback Matt Vollono from Annapolis, Md., completed 85 of 180 passes for 909 yards (82.6 per game) and three touchdowns. Freshman Wesley Snow of Florence, S.C., also had three TD tosses.

Redshirt freshman running back C.J. Oates led Camel rushers with 364 yards on 101 attempts. His 143 rushing yards at Carthage College ranked as the eighth-highest single-game performance in the PFL during 2008.

Carl Smith, a redshirt freshman running back from Pinetops, N.C., recorded Campbell's first 100-yard rushing effort on the NCAA level with a 109-yard performance against Birmingham Southern on opening day. He logged 276 rushing yards on 80 carries (3.5 per attempt) for the year.

Kelvin Murphy, a freshman wide out from Greensboro, N.C., topped CU in receiving with 20 receptions for 226 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Paul Constantine of Raleigh, N.C., led the Camels with three TD catches on the year.

Jeremiah Robinson led the defense with 2.5 sacks and ranked second on the team with five stops for loss. Defensively redshirt freshmen safeties Christian Dixon and Stephen Goldsmith had productive seasons in the starting all 11 games in the secondary, while ranking second (67) and third (57) on the team in tackles, respectively.

Campbell finished its first season on the Division I level with a 1-10 overall record, 0-8 in the PFL.
