BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After helping lead the Camels to a 2-1 victory
over Francis Marion in her first collegiate start in the central
defense, Campbell junior Kaili Terry was named A-Sun women's soccer
defensive player of the week. A starter during her first two years
as a forward for the Camels, Terry shifted to the back line and
helped organize a unit that allowed only seven shots on the game --
and just two on goal.
A red-shirt junior from Carrollton, Texas and Hebron High School,
Terry played the full 90 minutes. The Camel defense did not allow
a shot on goal for the final 44:43 of the contest to protect the
one-goal margin.
Terry comes from a true "soccer family." Her father (Kevin) played
professional soccer indoors for the Cleveland Force and is a FIFA
and MLS referee. Her older brother (Kevin) played at A-Sun rival
Lipscomb and younger brother (Keegan) is a freshman on the Campbell
men's team.
On Friday,
Hanna Salmen scored just 14 seconds into the match and Campbell
claimed a 2-1 win over visiting Francis Marion. Olga Ekblom
tallied a 25th minute strike to double the Camel lead. CU then
weathered an early second-half strike from Amanda Hall by
not allowing a shot on target for the final 44 minutes and
registered its first season-opening win since 2005.
Annabelle Gibney matched her career-best two-assist performance
last year vs. USC Upstate. Campbell finished with a 12-7 edge in
shots, including a 9-2 margin in attempts on goal.
Campbell looks for a second-straight victory to open the season
Monday night when North Carolina State visits for a 7:00 p.m.
start. The contest is the second of four-straight home dates at
the start of CU's 2009 schedule. CU also hosts South Carolina
State (Sept. 3) and Appalachian State (Sept. 5) before leaving the
home surface for the first time this year.
NC State dealt the Camels a 4-0 loss last year at Raleigh and holds
a 12-0-1 advantage in the all-time series, which dates to 1992,
Campbell's first varsity season. Campbell owns a 3-19-1 all-time
record against current Atlantic Coast Conference members. The 3
wins came against Virginia Tech before the Hokies joined the
ACC.
Campbell plays its first four and nine of its first 11 games of the
year in Buies Creek at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Campbell's 12
home regular season games are the most in the program's history.
CU played 11 home matches in 1995, including two A-Sun Championship
contests. Since its first year of varsity play in 1992, the
women's team has fashioned a 75-58-12 record at the Eakes
Complex.
