NC State drops Campbell in extra innings 9-8

RALEIGH, N.C. - Nine innings was not enough for this non conference matchup as Campbell tied the game in the top of the ninth inning but lost in extras as NC State scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning to beat Campbell 9-8 at Doak Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Campbell was down 8-2 at the end of seven but reeled off six runs in the next two stanzas to tie the ballgame at eight apiece heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Rob Chamra (1-0) picked up the win for the Wolfpack as the righty would pitch the extra frames for NC State to get the victory.

The Wolfpack would lead 3-0 at the end of two frames as starter Jeff Rydman would give up an RBI single to left by leadoff hitter Kyle Wilson and another RBI single to right field by Pratt Maynard.

NC State starter Jake Buchanan pitched a gem for the Wolfpack going 5.2 innings, shutting out the Fighting Camels while allowing just one hit in his outing but was not a factor in the decision.

Campbell (2-2) held NC State scoreless until the Wolfpack scored a pair of runs in the sixth. Andrew Ciencin started things off for NC State as he sent a RBI single down the left field line. John Gianis hit into a fielders choice but in the process scored Kyle Wilson for his only RBI of the contest.

The Fighting Camels scored their first runs of the contest in the top of the seventh as Kevin Nelson sent a double down the right field line to bring around Bryce Grady and Bryan Braswell to score.

NC State answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. Matt Bergquist started the scoring off with an RBI single to right field to score Dallas Poulk. Kyle Wilson continued the Wolfpack scoring as he sent a single that scooted just past the outreached glove of Ellis Lowe that brought home Bergquist. Andrew Ciencin notched another RBI as he sent a double to the wall in left center field scoring Kyle Wilson.

Campbell closed the margin in the eighth inning as Bryce Grady scored Alex Aycoth with an RBI double down the right field line. The scoring continued as Cameron Nelson belted an RBI single into center field scoring Bryce Grady. Nelson came around to score as Kevin Nelson sent a single into left field.

NC State reliever Russell Wilson walked in a run in the top of the ninth inning as he loaded the bases following two walks and a hit by pitch. He would later give up a 2 RBI single to center field to Bryan Braswell in order for Campbell to score the tying runs.

Things stayed silent until the bottom of the eleventh when Ben Brown intentionally walked the bases and gave up the game winning hit to Andrew Ciencin down the left field line. Ciencin finished the game going 5-7 with two RBI. Brown gets credit for the loss after pitched two innings, allowing one earned run off of three hits, the junior now sits at 0-2 on the season.

Campbell will be off until the weekend as they will head to Greensboro to face off against North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Fighting Camels will return home for a doubleheader against A&T on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. from Taylor Field.
