BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Frank
Zier pitched a complete game for the Fighting Camels while only
allowing one earned run and striking out 12 in Campbell's 3-1
victory over Kennesaw State on Friday night.
Zier's 12 strikeout
mark was the most by a Campbell starting pitcher since Logan
Davis struck out ten at Jacksonville on April 18, 2009. The
complete game mark was the second in six days for the Campbell
pitching staff following Logan Davis' nine inning
mark against Mercer on March 13. The sophomore gave up four hits
through the first two innings but settled in and only allowed two
hits throughout the remaining seven frames. Zier also posted a
perfect seventh, eighth and ninth inning to seal the win for
Campbell and moved to 3-2 on the season.
Campbell (13-6, 2-2
A-Sun) manufactured a run in the bottom half of the first inning to
take an early 1-0 lead off of a Alan
Denman RBI single to center field that brought around Chris
Bangi.
Kennesaw State (8-11,
0-1 A-Sun) answered in the top half of the second as Ronnie Freeman
sent a 1-1 offering from Frank
Zier over the fence in left field to knot the score at 1-1.
Pitching kept the
game tied as Ryan Rodebaugh and Zier gave up a combined five hits
over the next four innings and allowed no runners past second
base.
In the bottom of the
sixth Campbell was able to change things as Cameron Nelson grounded
back to Rodebaugh and reached first on a bobble from the starting
pitcher. That error scored the go ahead run in Bryan
Braswell and pushed Campbell ahead 2-1.
Campbell tacked on an
insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Zach Johnson sent an
RBI double to right center that scored Alex Aycoth and gave
Campbell the 3-1 margin.
Ryan Rodebaugh was
credited with the loss as the starting pitcher for Kennesaw went
seven innings, allowed just one earned run off of six hits, and
falls to 1-2 on the season.
The Fighting Camels
head back to the diamond on Saturday afternoon as they will
conclude the series with Kennesaw State with a doubleheader
starting at 1:00 p.m. at Taylor Field.
