BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Alan
Denman went 6-for-8 with three RBI and four runs scored as the
junior led Campbell to a split in Atlantic Sun doubleheader action
against Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon. Campbell dropped
game one, 7-6 in 11 innings, but came back to win game two,
9-6.
The
split, coupled with the game one victory, solidified Campbell's
first conference series win since April 9-10, 2009 against
Belmont.
In
game one, Campbell (14-7, 3-3 A-Sun) held a 5-4 lead going into the
top of the ninth inning. Ray Anderson led off for Kennesaw State
(9-12, 1-2 A-Sun) with a single to third base. That signaled the
exit for Campbell starting pitcher Logan Davis, who went eight
innings while giving up just four earned runs off of ten hits.
Daniel Gardo came into the game in relief and after Sean McClurken
sacrifice bunted to the mound and pinch hitter Bucky Smith grounded
out to Kevin Nelson at shortstop, Gardo had worked two outs with
Anderson sitting at third.
The
next play was the turning point in the contest as Jordan Craft sent
a hard hit groundball to Nelson at shortstop and on the relay to
first Nelson sailed the throw above first baseman Alan Denman's
head. As Denman came down with the ball, Craft touched the bag and
was called safe which allowed Anderson to score the tying run from
third base.
Campbell
was unable to answer in the bottom half of the ninth and the
contest was sent into extra frames. Kennesaw and Campbell both
pushed across runs in the tenth but the Owls scored the go ahead
run in the top of the eleventh off of a Payton Hart RBI single to
center field.
In
the bottom half of the eleventh, Ellis Lowe led off with a single
to left field. Lowe advanced to second after a Denman sacrifice
bunt but was not able to go any further as Cameron Nelson and Zach
Johnson both struck out swinging to end the game.
Ben
Brown was dealt the loss as the junior pitched the eleventh and
gave up the Hart RBI single. Brown drops to 2-3 on the season with
the loss.
J.B.
Johnson picked up the win for the Owls as the reliever pitched the
ninth through eleven innings while giving up just one earned run
off of four hits. Johnson moves to 3-0 on the campaign with the
win.
In
game two, it was the Campbell offense that dominated as the Camels
raced out to a 9-1 lead after six innings.
In
the fourth, Campbell scored three runs off of just two hits as
Kevin Nelson was the first to cross home plate as Ellis Lowe
reached on a fielding error by starting third baseman Payton
Hart. Alan Denman registered one of his RBI off of a single back
up the middle that brought around Chris Bangi to score. The inning
ended with Lowe crossing the dish following a Alex Aycoth groundout
to second.
In
the sixth the Fighting Camels matched their effort in the fourth,
scoring three runs off of three RBI hits. The first was Denman's
final RBI hit for the evening in a double to left field. Zach
Johnson found the gap in the infield as the senior sent a single
through the right side to bring around Denman to score. Finally,
Logan Self registered an RBI off of a single to center
field.
In
the top of the seventh though Kennesaw State stormed back as the
Owls scored five runs off of four hits. The innings started with
Clint Roques being hit by a pitch from Matt Sergey; the next batter
in Ross Tendler also reached on a walk. That ended the afternoon
for Sergey and gave way for Jeff Rydman who after striking out Sean
McClurken, gave up a single to Brandon Brown, as well as a two RBI
knock to Jordan Craft. Tyler Stubblefield registered the second
out of the inning with a groundout to Ellis Lowe at second but in
the effort advanced the runners to second and third. Next up for
the Owls was Payton Hart who sent a two RBI single to center field
and Hart later came across the plate with off of a Ronnie Freeman
single through the left side.
Rydman
stayed in to pitch through two outs in the eighth and left runners
at first and second for reliever Ryan Mattes who closed the game
and registered his first save while allowing just one hit through
1.1 innings.
Matt
Sergey was dealt the win as the junior went six plus innings while
allowing just two hits and one earned run. The righty moves to 2-2
on the season with the win.
For
Kennesaw the loss was registered to Bryan Blough who struggled
throughout his outing, giving up five earned runs off of six hits
in just 3.1 innings to move to 1-2 on the season.
Campbell
will step out of conference play to face off against in-state rival
NC State in a Tuesday evening tilt. The contest is set to start at
6:00 p.m. at Taylor Field. It will be S&S Entertainment Night
at the Ball Park as S&S Entertainment will be setting up all
