JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- Campbell's baseball team rebounded from a
tough Friday night loss at North Florida by winning the first game
of the conference doubleheader 10-4 but then dropped game two of
the doubleheader in 11 innings by a 5-4 score.
Campbell with the
split moves to 16-9 overall and a 4-5 mark in Atlantic Sun play,
North Florida moves to 14-12 and 4-2 in conference play.
In game one it was an
offensive fury displayed by the Fighting Camels as they scored 11
runs off of 22 hits.
The scoring started
early for Campbell as they put up four runs in the first inning.
The Camels could have scored two additional runs but Chris
Bangi and Ellis Lowe were picked off
and caught stealing which registered the first two outs of the
inning. With Alan
Denman at second, Alex Aycoth at first and two
outs Zach Johnson slapped an RBI
single to center field that scored Denman. Next up to the plate
was Kevin Nelson and he bested
Johnson's RBI single with a two RBI double down the right field
line that cleared the bases. DJ Johnson followed that
effort with the third straight RBI base hit, this time a double to
left field scoring Nelson and pushing the lead to 4-0.
North Florida pushed
a run across in the bottom half of the inning as Andrew Karmeris
sent an RBI single just past the outreached glove of shortstop Kevin
Nelson to bring the score to 4-1.
The middle innings
were all Fighting Camels as Campbell scored a run in the third,
four in the fourth and one in the fifth to push the margin to
10-1.
UNF made things
interesting though in the eighth as the Ospreys put up three runs
to draw the margin to 10-4. TJ Thompson started off the scoring
with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought around Preston
Hale to score. Later in the inning Kyle Dahl registered the second
RBI of the inning as he grounded out to first base but allowed
Andrew Karmeris to cross the dish. Finally it was Steve Hillan
with an RBI single that was hit through the right side that scored
Kerry Hall.
Logan
Davis picked up the win for the Fighting Camels as the senior
pitched his second complete game of the year while giving up four
earned runs off of ten hits. The righty now sits at 4-0 on the
season.
For North Florida the
loss was dealt to Michael Kelly as the pitcher went 3.2 innings
while giving up nine runs, five of which were earned, off of 15
hits. Kelly falls to 2-4 on the year with the loss.
In game two Campbell
jumped out to an early lead as Zach Johnson scored on a
wild pitch from UNF starting pitcher Kyle Finch.
The Camels added
another run in the fourth as Bryan Braswell sent an
RBI single up the middle that brought around Kevin Nelson to score.
In the fifth Campbell posted a run as Alan
Denman sacrifice flew out to center field to collect his only
RBI of the contest and pushed the lead to 3-0
The Ospreys pushed
the score to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Steve Hillan sent an
two RBI single through the right side.
The score was pushed
to 4-2 in the top of the seventh as Alex Aycoth singled up the
middle that scored Chris Bangi from second.
That lead was short
lived as UNF tied the contest in the bottom half of the inning as
pinch hitter Ryan Roberson came through in the clutch and singled
through the left side that scored Michael Smith and Andrew
Hannon.
Neither team was able
to score in the eighth or ninth and the contest was forced into
extra innings. Both teams were stalemated through the tenth but in
the bottom of the 11th UNF loaded the bases for Andrew Karmeris who
reached on a fielder's choice but registered the RBI as Kyle Dahl
crossed the plate for the winning run.
Daniel
Gardo was dealt the tough loss as the redshirt junior pitched
three innings of relief but gave up the winning run off of just one
hit. Gardo falls to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
Robbie Collier picked
up the win as the UNF reliever actually lasted longer than Kyle
Finch who started the contest. Collier went six innings while
giving up no earned runs off of five hits and now sits at 3-1 on
the 2010 season.
Campbell will head
back to the friendly confines of Taylor Field to face off against
MEAC opponent Norfolk State on Tuesday night. First pitch is
slated for 6:00 p.m. Campbell will honor the 25th anniversary of
Henry Rochelle's five home run contest before the start of the tilt
with Rochelle throwing out the first pitch.
