Campbelldropped
game one after holding a 4-2 lead going into the top of the ninth
in ten innings by a score of 9-4 and didn't recover in the second
game of the doubleheader to get swept in for the second straight
conference series.
Campbell(17-16,
4-11 A-Sun) has now lost seven straight contests and have dropped
eight of their last nine in conference play.
Game
one was led by a strong pitching performance from Logan
Davis. Daviscruised
through the first eight innings while giving up two earned runs off
of seven hits. It was in the ninth where Davisran
into trouble as Joe Guarnaccia singled with one out and set up
pinch hitter Jay Laurienzo. Laurienzo entered the contest having
posted just three at-bats on the season but came through in the
clutch as the freshman collected his first collegiate hit with a
two run shot to left field to knot the game at four.
In
the bottom of the frame Campbellgrounded
into two quick outs before Ellis Lowe doubled down the left field
line to put the winning run in scoring position. But FGCU reliever
Rob Matthews got out of the inning as he got Alan Denman to ground
out to shortstop to stop the Campbellthreat.
In
the extra stanza, Campbell's
pitching staff struggled to get three outs. Logan Davis started
the ninth and was able to record a quick out when he forced Tim
Roberson to ground out to shortstop. Following that out it was
consecutive outs that prompted Davis'
exit from the game. The 9.1 innings pitched was the longest outing
of Davis'
career.
Ryan
Mattes entered the contest and gave up a walk, a two RBI single,
and an RBI single before he exited without ever recording an out.
Logan Self came in relief and gave up a walk and an RBI single
before striking out Mikel Alvarez to get the second out of the
tenth. Following that out Tim Roberson reached base on an error by
Kevin Nelson before Self struck out Zach Maxfield to get out of the
inning.
The
Camels were not able to mount any type of offensive attack in the
bottom half of the inning as FGCU reliever Rob Matthews retired
Zach Johnson, Alex Aycoth and Bryce Grady in order.
Matthews
(1-0) picked up his first win of the season for the Eagles as he
went two scoreless innings, while only giving up one hit in his
outing.
Logan
Davis (4-2) was dealt the tough loss as the senior went 9.1 innings
while giving up six earned runs off of 11 hits.
In
game two Campbelljumped
out to another 4-2 lead as Chris Bangi registered the first RBI of
the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Bryan
Braswell. Later in the inning it was a groundout to shortstop from
Alan Denman that registered the second run of the inning and
allowed Campbellto
take the first lead of the contest at 3-2. Alex Aycoth finished up
the scoring in the inning as he sent a RBI single to left center to
push the lead to 4-2.
Campbellstarter
Matt Sergey cruised until the sixth inning when he gave up the go
ahead homerun to right center field from the bat of Josh Chester.
After giving up a double to Jay Laurienzo, Sergey exited and made
way for Daniel Gardo. Gardo was able to shut down the Eagles and
get out of the inning with no damage done and keeping the game at a
one run deficit.
FloridaGulfCoast(21-10,
12-3 A-Sun) was able to tack on a couple of more runs in the
seventh before Campbellattempted
a comeback in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh Ellis Lowe
brought the score to 7-5 as the junior slapped a double down the
left field line that brought around Chris Bangi to
score.
In
the eighth Campbellwas
able to place runners at second and third with no outs as Zach
Johnson led off with a single to right field which was followed by
an Alex Aycoth double to left field. That's when things got
interesting for the Fighting Camels. Kevin Nelson registered the
first out as the senior struck out swinging. Next up was DJ
Johnson who was hit by an offering from FGCU closer Jack Wagoner
but, in a controversial call, was called back to the plate by home
plate umpire Reid Churchill. Later, Johnson struck out and Bryan
Braswell flew out to right field to register the final two outs
leaving both runners in scoring position.
In
the ninth Chris Bangi sent a 1-1 offering from Wagoner to right
center to register a double and mark the third Fighting Camel in
scoring position in the eighth and ninth inning. But Bangi was
never able to advance as Lowe and Denman both struck out swinging
to end the contest.
The
win was credited to Pete Woodworth (5-1) as the righty went seven
innings, giving up five earned runs off of ten hits.
The
loss was charged to Matt Sergey (2-4) who went 5.1 innings, gave up
five earned runs off of ten hits.
Campbellwill
take a short break from conference play as the Fighting Camels will
head to East
Carolinaon
