SPARTANBURG,
S.C. - Campbell held a 5-4 advantage after five but gave up two
runs in the sixth and dropped the series opener to USC Upstate,
6-5, on Friday night at Harley Park.
The contest showcased the hitting power of both teams as the two
combined for 30 hits on the evening. The only problem was that
neither team was able to score many runs as Campbell and Upstate
both left 11 runners on the basepaths.
USC Upstate (12-27, 2-14 A-Sun) struck early as the Spartans got to
Campbell starter Logan Davis for two runs off of four consecutive
hits in the bottom of the first. Brian Dempsey led things off with
a double to left center, followed by a single through the left side
from Joe Barnes. With runners on the corners and no outs Jimmy
Tanner slapped an RBI single through the left side to score the
first run for Upstate. Trey Richardson stepped up to the plate
next and collected the fourth consecutive hit in the inning and it
was an RBI single through the right side to push the lead to 2-0 in
favor of Upstate.
Davis was able to settle down in the second and record three outs
but ran into more trouble in the third as the senior gave up a
round-tripper to left center field off the bat of Trey
Richardson.
Campbell (17-18, 4-12 A-Sun) was able to score a run in the fourth
as Alex Aycoth lead off with a single back up the middle. Josh
Holskey was able to advance Aycoth to third as the sophomore sent a
double down the right field line. DJ Johnson stepped up to the
plate and registered his second hit of the contest, this one a
infield single to the left side, to register the RBI and pull
Campbell to within two runs. Upstate starter Matt Branham was able
to get out of the inning as the righty picked off Johnson at first
and got Bryan Braswell to strike out swinging for the third
out.
The Spartans answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning
as Gaither Bumgardner led off with a single, advanced on a
sacrifice bunt from Brian Dempsey, and a groundout from Joe
Barnes. Bumgardner came around to score as Jimmy Tanner sent a
bloop single to right field but was enough to register the RBI and
give Upstate a 4-1 lead.
Campbell came back to take lead in the fifth as the Fighting Camels
loaded the bases with one out before Alex Aycoth slapped an RBI
single to left field that brought around Kevin Nelson to score.
The bases remained loaded for Zach Johnson as the senior sent a
shot that hit off the base of the wall that gave Johnson a two RBI
double. Campbell took the lead off of an RBI groundout to second
baseman Austin Liput by Josh Holskey to take the 5-4 lead.
Upstate came back to tie the score in the sixth as the Spartans
loaded the bases off of three consecutive infield singles. That
marked the end of Logan Davis' outing as the righty gave way to
Frank Zier. In Zier's first batter faced he gave up a sacrifice
fly to center field, off the bat of Joe Barnes, to score the tying
run. Zier intentionally walked Jimmy Tanner but then walked in a
run as Trey Richardson registered the RBI after watching four
consecutive balls.
The Spartans had a golden opportunity to score another run in the
sixth as Tyler Cook sent a single to the right side of the infield.
Trey Richardson made a base running mistake though as the
designated hitter ran right into the path of the ball, was called
out, and all the runners had to return back to their respective
bases. Frank Zier was able to record the final out of the inning
as Austin Liput flew out to left field to end the inning.
Campbell put runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth
but fell victim to consecutive outs to end both scoring
threats.
Alex Aycoth was the leader for the offense as the senior set his
mark for hits this season, tied his career best mark in that
category as he went 4-for-5, and registered an RBI for the Fighting
Camels.
Logan Davis is dealt the loss for Campbell as the senior drops his
third straight decision and falls to 4-3 after going five plus
innings, giving up six earned runs off of 12 hits.
For USC Upstate the win goes to Matt Branham who gave up five runs,
three of which were earned, in six innings of work. The senior
moves to 3-3 on the season. Tyler Oliver registered his third save
of the season as the senior pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
For Campbell the loss marks the ninth straight overall and the
eighth in a row conference play. The Fighting Camels will get back
in action, in a doubleheader, on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
