BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Senior Jonathon Lopez went six scoreless
innings of relief, while striking out seven, to lead Campbell past
ETSU 17-8 on Friday night at Taylor Field.
Lopez came into the
contest in the fourth inning and posted his best outing of the
year as the lefty faced just three over the minimum in the final
six innings to lead Campbell to its third win in four games. His
six innings pitched was his longest outing in the Orange and Black
and his seven strikeouts was the most he has had while at
Campbell. Lopez with the decision moves to 2-0 on the season.
With the win Campbell
moves to 20-19 overall and a 6-13 mark in conference play. ETSU
lost its third straight and falls to 20-17 with a record of 9-7 in
Atlantic Sun action.
"It was a good win
for us," Campbell head coach Greg Goff stated. "It was great to
see Jonathon Lopez pitch the way that he did tonight and it was
great to see the crowd getting behind him the longer he went in the
game. I was proud of our team tonight, I was proud of the support,
tonight was a good night," he continued.
It was a good night
for Campbell as they scored in every inning of the contest and
pounded out 23 hits as all of the starters registered a hit. The
Camels took the lead for good in the fourth as they scored four
runs off of ETSU starter Chas Byrne.
The game went back
and forth throughout the first three innings as ETSU scored three
in the first, one in the second and four in the third. Campbell
countered that offense with two in the first, a three run mark in
the second and plated a runner in the third to trail 8-6 at the end
of the third stanza.
Two out hits were key
for the Fighting Camels as they scored seven runs with two outs in
the inning. That was the story in the fourth as following Josh
Holskey's popout to shortstop, which registered the second out of
the inning, Campbell mounted a rally and scored off of an RBI
single by Kevin Nelson and a bases clearing three RBI double to
right center by Bryan Braswell.
Campbell pushed
across three in the fifth off of a Zach Johnson round tripper to
left field.
The Fighting Camels
scored in the sixth off of a DJ Johnson RBI single to right field
and plated two more in the seventh off of throwing error by ETSU
third baseman Bo Reeder and a RBI single up the middle by Bryan
Braswell. Campbell closed out the scoring in the eighth with a
Holskey single to left field that brought around Zach Johnson.
Zach Johnson led the
way offensively for the Camels as the senior set career and season
high marks with five hits. Five Camels collected multiple RBI as
Braswell tied his season and career high mark with four on the
evening and Zach Johnson registered three. Ellis Lowe, Alex Aycoth
and DJ Johnson all had two apiece.
This marks the first
win at home in conference play for Campbell since March 20
when it beat Kennesaw State. The win also marked the first
back-to-back wins since March 20-23 when the Fighting Camels
defeated the Owls and then went on to defeat NC State.
Derek Trent led the
way for the Bucs as the junior went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Bo
Reeder also had a good night as the sophomore went 3-for-5.
ETSU starter Chas
Byrne was dealt the loss as the righty lasted 3.2 innings while
giving up ten runs (nine earned) off of 11 hits. Byrne falls to
3-5 on the season.
Campbell will face
off against ETSU in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Saturday
afternoon at Taylor Field.
