WILMINGTON, N.C. - Campbell took a 5-2 lead in the top half of the
sixth inning but the advantage didn't last long as the Camels gave
up six runs in the bottom half of the frame to drop the
contest, 8-5, to UNC Wilmington at Brooks Field on Wednesday
night.
Campbell has now dropped 10 out of the last 11 contests to UNC
Wilmington.
UNCW (16-13) had a slight 2-1 advantage after five complete but in
the sixth inning both teams exploded offensively to push the game
to the final score.
Campbell (17-13) started off the scoring in the top half of the
inning as Ellis Lowe started things
with a single to left field. Alan
Denman followed Lowe by getting on base by getting hit by a
pitch from UNCW starter Thomas Jones. With runners on first and
second and no outs, UNCW went to its bullpen and brought in Andrew
Harnage. Zach Johnson was the first
Camel that Harnage faced and he laid down a sacrifice bunt to the
left side of the reliever but Johnson reached safely as Harnage's
throw to first base went errant. The error allowed around Lowe to
score the first Campbell run of the inning.
With the first run having scored and runners at the corners Alex
Aycoth kept the inning going as the senior was hit by an
offering from Harnage. Josh Holskey came up to the
dish next and came up with a two RBI single to center field that
scored Johnson and Denman. With that hit Harnage made way for
another UNCW reliever this time in the arm of Steve Davis. Davis
registered the first out of the inning as he struck out DJ
Johnson. Bryan Braswell was next up
and knocked in the final run of the frame as the senior singled
through the left side scoring Aycoth.
UNCW was not finished though as they scored six runs off as four
different Campbell pitchers rotated through the game in that
inning.
Things started off with a Cody Stanley double to center field.
That hit brought the end of the contest for Campbell starter Jeff
Rydman as he made way for Daniel Gardo. Robbie Monday
followed up with a single just past the diving arm of Kevin
Nelson at shortstop. Matt Holt was able to reach on the
fielding error on Gardo which allowed Stanley to score from third.
The hits continued for the Seahawks as Michael Bass sent an RBI
single to left field, scoring Monday.
With two runs in and just one out Thomas Pope came into the contest
to pinch hit and he did not disappoint as he was hit by a Gardo
offering to reach safely. That marked the end of the contest for
Gardo and he gave the ball to Corey
Carver. Carver's outing didn't start any better as with the
bases loaded he plunked the first batter he faced in Michael Rooney
which scored Matt Holt. Alex Hill was next to the plate and
grounded out to Carver but yet another run scored. Carver's day
was done after that batter and Ryan
Mattes came into the contest. In Mattes' first batter faced,
Grayson Evans sent a two RBI double to left field to round out the
Seahawk scoring in the sixth.
That ended the scoring for both teams as both pitching staffs were
able to settle down and not allow anymore runs.
Daniel Gardo was dealt the
loss as the redshirt junior went 0.1 innings while giving up four
runs, just two being earned, and fall to 1-2 on the season for the
Fighting Camels.
The win is credited to the left hand arm of Steven Davis who
pitched an inning of relief and allowed no runs to move to 1-2 on
the campaign.
Campbell will be back in action at home on Friday night against
Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Friday
with a doubleheader to follow at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
