BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Cameron Nelson led the offensive attack for
the Fighting Camels as the junior posted a 7-for-11 afternoon with
two home runs and 10 RBI to lead Campbell to a split with Longwood,
dropping game one by a 24-12 score and winning game two by a 22-6
margin.
Campbell moves to
25-23 on the season while Longwood advances to 22-18.
In game one the
two teams combined for 36 runs off of 38 hits in the contest which
was a stark contrast to Friday's contest as the two teams
collected just nine runs. The scoring started early
and often for both teams as Longwood jumped out to a 9-0 advantage
after three and a half innings. Campbell answered with a trio of
runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the contest to a 9-3
score.
The flurry of scoring
kept coming as the Lancers posted a four spot in the top of the
fifth followed by five runs in the bottom half of the frame by the
Camels.
Campbell scored four
more runs in the bottom of the sixth but from there on it was all
Longwood as they scored two in the seventh and an additional nine
in the top half of the ninth inning.
For Campbell the loss
was dealt to sophomore Frank Zier who lasted three innings while
giving up five hits off of four earned runs. Zier falls to 4-6 on
the campaign.
Longwood starter
Kyler Morgan went four innings, gave up seven earned runs off of 12
hits but it was good enough for the win as he moves to 4-1 on the
season. Matt Gwaltney picked up his first save of the season as he
notched four scoreless innings while scattering just four
hits.
In the nightcap
Campbell jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after Alan Denman slammed a
first pitch offering to deep left field in the first inning.
Longwood took a 4-2
lead after scoring a run in the second and three in the third.
The Fighting Camels
offense wasn't done yet though as they posted three runs in each
the fourth and the fifth. The fifth inning was highlighted by a
towering three run shot to center field by Josh Holskey that pushed
the Camels ahead 8-5.
In the sixth the
Lancers inched closer as they posted a run following a David Smiy
single to right field to pull to within two.
But that was the end
of the Longwood scoring attack as Campbell's offensive took over by
scoring 13 runs in the bottom of the sixth. In the inning the
Camels sent 17 batters to the plate and collected ten hits. The
inning was marked by home runs from Cameron Nelson and Zach Johnson
as well as a Josh Holskey triple.
Campbell's pitching
staff shut down the Lancers in the final three innings as they only
conceded two hits and struck out three.
The Fighting Camels
tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth following a
Cameron Nelson double to right center field to bring the score to
the final of 22-6.
Holskey posted a
2-for-5 outing in game two while collecting a career high five
RBI. Cameron Nelson tied his season high marks in at-bats, hits
and posted a new mark in RBI as the junior collected four. Zach
Johnson went 3-for-5 in the nightcap with three RBI and Alan Denman
posted a 1-for-1 outing with three RBI while earning two walks as
well as sacrificing twice.
Logan Davis earned
the win for the Camels as he lasted seven innings while giving up
eight earned runs off of 13 hits. The senior struck out eight and
only walked two in posting his sixth win of the year (6-3).
The loss was charged
to Chris Briere who went 5.1 innings while giving up 13 runs, 12 of
which were earned off of 13 hits. The righty struck out three and
walked three as he fell to 5-5 on the campaign.
The Camels will head
out on the road for the start of a five game swing starting on
Tuesday as they travel to Norfolk State to take on the Spartans.
First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
