HIGH POINT, N.C. - Freshman Pirjo Leppikangas scored her first
career goal in the first half and Campbell bested High Point 1-0
Monday at Vert Stadium in its first away match of 2010.
Campbell (1-1) evened its record and moved to 4-0 all-time against
2009 Big South Conference champion High Point (1-1).
"It was a really strong effort all around," said fifth-year head
coach Todd Clark. "Anytime you beat a defending conference
champion, it's a great result. I'm very pleased with our defending
and fortunately, unlike last Friday, we made the most of our
chances."
Campbell (1-0) scored the game's lone goal in the 30th
minute when Kaili Terry's free kick found Leppikangas on the
backside of the six-yard box, where she took a touch to settle the
ball before sending it near-post for her first goal in a Camel
uniform.
High Point outshot Campbell 11-7, but the Camels' back four and
keeper Jamie Panfil held firm and forced the Panthers into several
long shots. Campbell put four shots on target, while only three of
High Point's 11 found the frame.
Keeper Jamie Panfil made three saves and recorded her seventh
career shutout, moving her into a tie for third on Campbell's
career shutout list.
"For us to take on a team like High Point was very fun," said
Clark. "They're very well-coached and it's satisfying to come away
with a win. We'll enjoy this tonight and then get ready for
Elon."
Campbell returns to the pitch Friday when it travels to face Elon
in an 8 p.m. kickoff. The Camels are just 2-6 all-time versus the
Phoenix, who dropped their season-opener 2-1 to Virginia Tech last
Friday.
