Campbell and NC A&T split season-opening doubleheader.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Campbell scored 8 times in the top of the first inning of Saturday's nightcap and earned a doubleheader split with North Carolina A&T on opening day at World War Memorial Stadium.

The Camels closed out the second game with a 15-3 victory. A&T scored 14 runs off 16 hits to claim a 14-9 win in the opener. The same teams will meet Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. twinbill at Buies Creek.

Twelve Camels batted in the first inning as the Camels scored 8 runs off 6 hits and two errors to start the nightcap. Ellis Lowe singled twice in the frame, including an RBI hit. Tyler Hutchinson and Kyle Holstrom added run-scoring singles in the opening at-bat.

CU added an unearned run in the third, plus 4 more in the fourth to back starter Jake Smith (1-0). The junior right-hander allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts in his Camel debut.

The Camels scored 15 runs off 11 hits and capitalized on 4 Aggie errors. Lowe, Hutchinson and Holmstrom had 2 hits apiece, while Manny Alvarez drove in 3 on a trio of ground outs.

A&T starter Nick Oelker (0-1) gave up 13 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and hit 4 batters in 4 innings. Xavier Macklin belted his second 2-run homer of the day in the bottom of the first inning for the Aggies.

In the first game, Marquis Riley drove in 3, while Macklin, Kelvin Freeman, Dario Little and Luke Tendler had 2 RBI apiece for the Aggies.

After the Camels took a 2-0 lead, A&T scored 6 times in the bottom of the second, keyed by Little's 2-run double and a 2-out, 2-run single from Riley.

Josh Holskey's 2-run homer to right-center cut the lead to 9-5, but Freeman had a two-run blast in the sixth and Macklin added a 2-run shot in the 8th.

Holskey finished the opener 3-of-4 at the plate to pace Campbell's 11-hit attack. The Camels cut the gap to 14-9 in the ninth thanks to four hit batters, two walks and an error.

However, Craig Erskine came on with one out and the tying run in the on-deck circle and struck out Ellis Lowe, then retired Alan Denman on a grounder for the final out.

A&T starter Esterlin Paulino (1-0) scattered 10 hits and allowed 5 runs while walking one and striking out two over seven innings to earn the victory. Campbell starter Logan Self (0-1) surrendered 8 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits in 3 innings.
