BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Steven Leonard homered and Heath Bowers struck out eight to lead Campbell in a 7-2 win over Miami (Ohio) Friday at Jim Perry Stadium in the Fighting Camel Classic opener for both teams.
Leonard went 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the second inning, putting Campbell (6-2) ahead 4-0 against Miami (1-5). The redshirt junior catcher also picked up ingles in the first and eighth, while notching a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Bowers (2-0) earned his 23rd career win, tying the senior with Barry Wilson (1986-89) for third on the Campbell all-time list. Bowers stands three victories shy of the CU all-time mark of 26, held by Cory Satterfield (1985-88).
The right-hander went eight innings, allowing a pair of runs on six hits with eight punchouts and a walk for the Camels.
Campbell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with a RBI single from Kyle Leady and two runs on RedHawk errors.
With the Camels up 5-0, back to back one out Miami hits, including a double from Kendall Johnson, put runners on second and third. RBI singles from Brooks Urich and Steve Sada made it 5-2 CU.
Campbell picked up two more in the bottom of the inning, however, one on the RedHawks' third error of the game, and the second on a RBI groundout from Brian Taylor.
Redshirt freshman Nathan Arp closed out the ninth for Campbell, striking out one and allowing a hit in his first appearance, preserving a 7-2 win.
Cedric Mullins joined Leonard with a three-hit day, also scoring a run, while Leady scored twice, adding a double.
Miami's Ryan Powers (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
Matt Honchel went 2-for-4 for the RedHawks.
Campbell resumes Fighting Camel Classic play against Maryland Eastern Shore tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The game follows Furman and Miami at 1 p.m.
Furman defeated UMES 5-1 in the tournament opener Friday.
