BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Behind seven scoreless frames from Nick Thayer, Campbell cruised to its first shutout of the season, an 8-0 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in Fighting Camel Classic play Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.
Thayer (2-0) posted his third quality start in as many appearances for Campbell (7-2), working seven shutout innings with just three hits and a walk, plus eight strikeouts. In three starts, Thayer has allowed just one earned run.
UMES (1-7) advanced a runner to third just once in the game when a CU fielding error prolonged the Hawks' fifth inning, but a Thayer strikeout ended the threat, stranding runners on the corners.
Senior Travis Long entered the game in the top of the eighth with Campbell ahead 3-0 and pitched two more scoreless stanzas for the Camels, retiring all six of his batters while fanning two and earning his first save.
Tanner Whiteman (0-3) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Brian Taylor put Campbell on the board in the second with a RBI single to left, scoring Cole Hallum. Still up 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Steven Leonard, who led off the inning with a base hit, scored on a wild pitch.
Campbell tacked on another run in the home half of the seventh with a Kyle Prats squeeze bunt, bringing Hallum home and making it 3-0 Camels.
CU broke it open in the eighth, taking advantage of two UMES miscues in the field. Kyle Leady JD Andreessen and Prats drove in runs in a five-run inning, giving Campbell an 8-0 lead.
Leonard, Lopez and Taylor all picked up three hits apiece for the Camels, while Hallum scored three times in the win.
UMES' JP Black allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in the eighth and did not record an out. Will Turley tossed an inning, allowing an unearned run with a strikeout and a walk.
Campbell resumes tournament play on Sunday, the final day of the Fighting Camel Classic. Miami (Ohio) takes on UMES at 1 p.m. before CU and Furman meet at 4:30 p.m. Miami (Ohio) topped Furman 4-3 in Saturday's opener.
