BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Eight Camels knocked in runs in game one and seven scored in game two, helping Campbell sweep a Wednesday doubleheader over William & Mary at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell (10-2) won its seventh-straight game with Wednesday's 8-5 game two victory over the Tribe (4-4). The Camels picked up a 10-6 win in game one of the twinbill.
Spots two through nine in Campbell's game one lineup knocked in nine of Campbell's 10 runs, and the lone Camel who did not, leadoff man Cedric Mullins, scored twice in the win. Mullins went 2-for-4, also drawing a walk.
Campbell trailed 4-1 in the third after Matthew Tilley's grand slam in the top of the second, but a bases loaded single from Anthony Lopez and a walk issued to Seth LaRue with the bases loaded again scored three to knot the game at 4-all.
CU scored a run in the sixth on a W&M error, but the Tribe regained the lead with RBI singles from Charley Gould and Tim Hoehn in the top of the seventh.
Campbell bounced back with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Austin Beard's RBI double, one of his two hits in the win. The Camels picked up a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on RBI base hits from Kyle Leady and Cole Hallum, giving CU the 10-6 advantage.
Coley Thompkins (2-0) earned the win in relief, allowing a run on four hits with three punchouts in three innings, the first of his two appearances on the day. Travis Long also tossed four innings, giving up a run on two hits with a career-best seven strikeouts, plus a walk.
CU starter Wes Noble allowed four runs on three hits with three walks in two innings.
Michael Toner (0-1) was charged with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in two innings. Aaron Fernandez started on the mound for W&M, allowing four runs, three earned on three hits in 2 1/3.
In the nightcap, Campbell again jumped on the board in the first, with Mullins coming home on a Steven Leonard sacrifice fly after leading off the inning with a triple, his third of the season.
Brian Taylor's solo home run in the second, his first as a Camel, made it 2-0 Campbell after two complete.
Cole Hallum's homer in the third, a two-run bomb to left, capped off a four-run inning, extending the Campbell lead to 6-1.
Up 7-1 after Steven Leonard's second RBI of the game, William & Mary's Ryan Hall cleared the bases with a double to left, cutting the Campbell lead in half.
The teams traded runs in the seventh and Cole Hallum closed the door with a two inning save, his second of the season, striking out the first and third outs of the ninth.
Bobby Thorson (1-1) was credited with the win, going five innings with four runs on six hits, three strikeouts and three walks. Sam Rector pitched 2/3 of an inning in his first appearance on the mound, while Thompkins bridged the gap, allowing an unearned run in 1 1/3.
Daniel Powers (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits with a walk in 2 1/3.
Campbell pounded out double digit hits in both games, making it seven times on the season and three games in a row the Camels recorded 10 or more hits.
Campbell begins a three game series against Bowling Green Friday, March 6, at 4 p.m. The series continues Saturday (4 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
