LYNCHBURG, VA. – Victor Cole pitched eight scoreless innings, leading Liberty to a 7-0 win over Campbell Saturday, evening the Big South series.
Liberty (22-13, 8-3) handed Campbell (25-11, 8-6) its first shutout loss of the season. The Camels took Friday night's series opener 3-2 behind Heath Bowers' nine strikeouts, plus a 4-for-5 effort from Kyle Leady.
The series will wrap up tomorrow at 4 p.m. Sunday's game will be nationally televised on ESPNU, and will also be available on the WatchESPN app.
Cole (4-1) scattered eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk in eight frames. Caleb Evans tossed the ninth with a strikeout and a walk.
Campbell starter Nick Thayer (5-2) pitched two innings with six runs, four earned, on six hits with a strikeout and a walk, exiting with no outs in the third.
Andrew Witczak worked six innings in relief, allowing an unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Flames jumped on the board with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first, including Sammy Taormina's RBI double.
Liberty took advantage of a Campbell error in the third, scoring four more, only one earned, with Taormina driving in another on a single to right. Josh Close plated the Flames' final score on a bunt RBI single with two out in the inning.
The big LU inning came after Campbell put two on with one out in the top of the third.
Ashton Perritt went 3-for-4 with a run for the Flames, while Dalton Britt scored twice, going 2-for-4.
Dustin Krob was 2-for-3 for the Camels, while Matt Parrish went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Campbell will head to Elon on Tuesday, April 14, before returning to Jim Perry Stadium, hosting Charleston Southern for the weekend.
