LYNCHBURG, VA. – Ashton Perritt went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead Liberty past visiting Campbell 10-2 Sunday, clinching the Big South series for the Flames. The game was nationally televised on ESPNU.
Liberty (23-13, 9-3 Big South) scored in six straight innings from the second to the seventh, pounding out 17 hits, a season high allowed by Campbell (25-12, 8-7 Big South).
Perritt knocked in runs in the second, fifth and seventh, with a single, a double and a triple, respectively, tying the game with a base hit in the second inning. Perritt also scored in a two-run seventh for the Flames to make it 10-2.
Shawn Clowers (8-2) pitched six innings in the win, allowing two runs, both earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Zach Clinton and Corey Howard combined for a scoreless final three innings.
Grant Yost (3-4) took the loss for Campbell, allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 2 1/3. Five Camels pitched in the game, with Travis Long striking out four and Sam Rector tossing a scoreless final 1 2/3.
Alex Close knocked in two for the Flames with a two-run homer in the fourth, putting Liberty ahead 6-2. Sammy Taormina, Andrew Yacyk and Clay Keranen all added three hits and two runs for Liberty in the win.
Cedric Mullins highlighted Campbell at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run. The junior led off the game with a double into the left-center gap. After moving to third on a Steven Leonard sacrifice bunt, the junior scored on Kyle Leady's single to right for an early Campbell 1-0 lead.
Drew Butler added a pair of hits, including a RBI single in the fourth that scored Cole Hallum from second.
Liberty turned a double play following both Campbell scores, quieting would be rallies.
Both teams left 10 on base in the game.
The Camels took Friday night's series opener 3-2 behind Heath Bowers' nine strikeouts, plus a 4-for-5 effort from Kyle Leady. Liberty evened the series with a 7-0 win Saturday.
Campbell will head to Elon on Tuesday, April 14, before returning to Jim Perry Stadium, hosting Charleston Southern for the weekend.
