CLINTON, S.C. – Senior right-hander Heath Bowers tied the Campbell career wins and strikeouts records, and the Camels opened their Big South series at Presbyterian with a 7-2 win Thursday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.
Bowers entered the game a win shy of Cory Satterfield's (1985-88) Campbell record 26 career wins, and three short of Wes Hepler's (1999-02) record 258 career strikeouts. The senior from Lillington, N.C. earned the win and fanned three to knot both marks.
Bowers went seven frames, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk, improving to 5-2 on the season. He allowed one hit after the third inning.
Campbell improved to 22-8 overall and evened its Big South record at 5-5. PC dipped to 17-13 on the year and 1-6 in league play.
Sam Rector tossed the final two innings for Campbell, allowing a hit and notching a strikeout.
David Sauer (3-3) took the loss for PC, surrendering six runs, five earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts.
Matt Parrish went 3-for-5, driving in two runs for CU. The junior earned his third three hit performance in his last seven games, putting Campbell on the board in the fourth before adding another RBI single in a three-run Campbell fifth.
Leadoff man Cedric Mullins recorded a season-best four hits, including two doubles, with a RBI and a run. The junior also stole a season-high three bases. Seth LaRue scored twice for the Camels, going 2-for-5 in the win.
Anthony Lopez went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run, while Brian Taylor went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run.
The Camels trailed 2-0 after three innings when a Parrish RBI single and a Lopez sacrifice fly knotted the game in the fourth. Steven Leonard's RBI groundout in the fifth gave Campbell a 3-2 lead before Cole Hallum's sacrifice fly and Parrish's second RBI hit of the game.
Mullins drove a run home in the sixth and Taylor knocked one in in the ninth for a 7-2 Campbell road win.
Cam McRae and AJ Priaulx both were 2-for-4 for the Blue Hose. Ryan Hedrick scored both PC runs.
The Camels will continue their series against the Blue Hose tomorrow at 2 p.m., concluding the set Saturday at 1 p.m..
Campbell returns to Jim Perry Stadium on Tuesday, April 7, hosting East Carolina. CU takes on North Carolina Central a day later in Buies Creek. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. for both games.
