BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Mitchell McCreary and Carlos Ortiz both drove in two and North Carolina Central downed Campbell 6-3 Wednesday at Jim Perry Stadium.
NCCU (16-17) used two-run frames in the fifth, sixth and ninth, to top the Camels (24-10).
Jonathan Figueroa (1-0) earned the win for NCCU, pitching six innings with two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Black Morgan worked two scoreless innings, while Andrew Vernon allowed a run in the ninth.
Coley Thompkins (3-2) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in three innings of relief.
Campbell starter Matt Meyer tossed two scoreless frames in his collegiate debut, allowing two hits with two punchouts and a walk.
Campbell's leadoff man reached four times in the game, including the second, third, fifth and sixth, but the Camels could only capitalize in the fifth with a RBI single from Cedric Mullins and a Seth LaRue sacrifice fly.
The two-run frame knotted the game at two after Carlos Ortiz' two-run single in the top half of the inning.
The Eagles added two more on Mitchell McCrary's two-run single an inning later.
In the ninth, NCCU took advantage of Campbell's second error of the night to bring another pair home and extend its lead to 6-2.
Steven Leonard's base hit with two away in the bottom of the ninth tacked on a run for Campbell to make it 6-3, but a called strike three ended the rally for the Camels.
Leonard was 3-for-5 for the Camels, while Matt Parrish and JD Andreessen went 2-for-3 in the loss.
Ortiz was one of three Eagles with two hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Campbell rounds out its home and home series with NCCU on May 6 in Durham, N.C.
The Camels return to Big South play this weekend, traveling to Liberty April 10-12. The series finale, Sunday at 4 p.m., will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
