MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Campbell piled up 543 yards of total offense and forced four Chowan turnovers on the way to a 47-14 win on the road Saturday at Garrison Stadium.
The Camels (2-0) held Chowan (1-1) to a school single-game record 1 yard rushing in their second modern era (since 2008) matchup. Campbell took last season's contest 35-3 in Buies Creek.
Aaron Blockmon, a redshirt sophomore from Sanford, N.C., hauled in six Elijah Burress passes for Campbell school records of 172 yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Hawks.
Burress completed 17-of-22 passes for 255 yards and four scores, also running for 48 yards. Campbell ran for 288 yards, with Jared Joyner leading the way with 90 and a touchdown, including a 64 burst that put the Camels ahead 37-7 in the third quarter.
Darius Barnes added 62 yards on 15 carries, while D'Shawn Jones rushed for 56.
Deontae Henderson posted a team-high five tackles, while Syd Holt and Jack Ryan each picked up four tackles and a sack. DJ Jones, Chris Beaty and Dante Simmons all snagged interceptions, while Brandon Jones forced a fumble. Ray Miller also blocked a punt for the Camels, adding three tackles.
Randall Dixon passed for 156 yards and a touchdown for the Hawks, going 13-for-24 with an interception. Jordan Watkins added 65 yards passing on 2-of-7 attempts, connecting on a touchdown with two interceptions. Kaine Lombard gathered 60 yards receiving.
Nate Wyche led Chowan with 10 tackles.
The teams combined for 31 points in the first quarter, with Campbell holding the 24-7 edge. The score was 7-7 after just 1:19 of play. The Camels reached the endzone on just three plays in their opening drive, and Chowan followed with a 72 yard strike on a wide receiver pass on its first play from scrimmage.
Blockmon's second TD catch of the day, a 45 yard score, plus a 13 yard De'Shawn Jones run and a 33 yard Mitchell Brown field goal gave Campbell the early advantage. Blockmon added another touchdown catch before the half to give the Camels a 31-7 lead.
Jared Joyner broke away for a 64 yard TD at the 11:35 mark in the third before Chowan answered with Edwin Thomas' touchdown catch to make it 37-14 Camels.
Blockmon's fourth touchdown grab came with 7:20 to go in the third, spinning off a Chowan defender and racing away to the endzone for 68 yards. Brown tacked on his second field goal of the night, a 44 yarder, to open the fourth.
The Camels return to Barker-Lane Stadium next Saturday, September 17, for a 6 p.m. matchup with Presbyterian.
