BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
JJ Donnelly capped off a hat trick performance with his game-winner in double overtime to lift Campbell over Longwood, 4-3, on Saturday evening at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
The goal capped off a three-goal, come-from-behind win for the Camels (8-5-1, 4-1-0) who have now won four-straight league games and remain tied with Liberty atop the Big South standings.
CU holds the tiebreaker over the Liberty after a 2-1 win in Buies Creek on Sept. 29. With Saturday's loss, Longwood falls to 0-12-1 overall and 0-4-0 in Big South action.
Donnelly found himself on the end of
Gabe Parrish's cross and buried a header off the left post and into the back of the net for the game-winner in the 104th minute.
Carel Kayembe held possession on the right flank and laid off a pass to Parrish for the cross to Donnelly at the far post.
The goal sealed Donnelly's second hat trick of the season and his seventh goal in the last five matches.
"We didn't come out of the locker room prepared to chase three points in the league like you should," said head coach
Dustin Fonder.
Fonder continued,"But I thought the response after halftime was fantastic and the character of our group showed. We hunted for the win, not the tie, from the first whistle of the second half, all the way through the second overtime."
Donnelly scored his first goal in the ninth minute of play, and his second goal in the 52nd minute. Parrish added the equalizer for Campbell in the 79th minute.
Longwood opened the scoring in the sixth minute of play, as Dan Campos converted a penalty kick after a handball in the box was called on the Camels.
CU equalized just three minutes later on Donnelly's first goal of the match. On a quick throw-in, Kayembe played Parrish on the right side, who played a cross to the middle of the box to Donnelly.
The junior from London, England rose above the defenders and flicked a header into the left side of goal for the early equalizer.
Eoin O'Donovan gave Longwood a 2-1 lead in the 33rd minute. He gathered a loose ball in the box and buried his attempt from seven yards away on the left side of goal.
Josh Hanratty doubled the visitor's lead three minutes later with his low, diving header at the far left post off O'Donovan's corner kick.
Donnelly's second came seven minutes into the second half.
Ian Rees intercepted a pass in the midfield and played a through ball down the left side that Donnelly put past Longwood goalkeeper Lance Da Silva from 15 yards away.
Parrish netted the equalizer for Campbell in the 79th minute.
A quick back-heel pass from
Josh Signey set up Parrish from seven yards away and the junior from Portland, Ore., buried his shot to the far left side.
Neither team could break the deadlock following Parrish's equalizer and the match went to overtime.
Saturday's match was Campbell's third overtime match of the season, having previously tied Old Dominion, 2-2, on Sept. 12 and defeated Navy, 2-1, on Aug. 31 in OT contests.
Campbell out shot Longwood, 22-11, including a lopsided 11-3 mark in the second half.
The Camels also edged the Lancers in corner kicks, 9-5, with Longwood tallying the lone corner kick in the overtime sessions.
Campbell travels to Boone, N.C., on Tuesday to take on Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
