BOONE, N.C. – Campbell and Appalachian State battled to a 1-1 draw in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
JJ Donnelly scored the lone goal for Campbell (8-5-2), his 12th goal of the year. Justin Pruitt tallied App State's (4-6-4) only goal of the match.
"I thought our boys matched the intensity of App State and earned a hard fought draw on the road," said head coach
Dustin Fonder.
Fonder continued,"Our group has really good character and they raised the intensity in the second half. Unfortunately, we had to settle for a tie, but our guys have a good spirit about them and they are always chasing wins."
Donnelly opened the scoring for Campbell in the 62nd minute of play.
He slipped through the App State back line, received a through ball from
Mario Da Silva and finished his shot beyond the App State goalie, Jake Agnew, for the first goal of the match.
App State equalized seven minutes later off the foot of Justin Pruitt. He was on the receiving end of Reed Hunnicutt's low cross from six yards away and buried a one-touch finish past
Matthew Mozynski.
Campbell outshot App State, 4-1, in the two overtime periods, but the two sides weren't able to find the back of the net for the game-winner.
Neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes, as App State held a 5-4 edge in shots, including a 3-2 advantage on frame.
Donnelly tallied three shots in the first half, including a shot that clipped the top of the crossbar.
Ian Rees also tested Agnew, as his shot from 25 yards away was knocked away.
Mozynski made a key save midway through the half to keep the Mountaineers off the board. A through ball was played to Pruitt, but Mozynski stormed off his line and made the stop from six yards away.
On the night, the home side held a 13-10 advantage in total shots, but the two teams each had six shots on target.
Campbell, tied for first in the Big South, returns to league action on Saturday, Oct. 21, in Clinton, S.C., against Presbyterian at 4 p.m.
