BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Anna Brantley netted the game-winner to lead the Campbell University (9-5-1, 5-1-1) women's soccer team past Gardner-Webb (3-11-1, 1-4-1), 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
With the victory, Campbell remains tied for second place in the Big South standings with High Point and Longwood, all who boast a 5-1-1 ledger in conference play. Unbeaten Liberty (6-0-1) currently sits in first place in the conference.
This is Brantley's third goal of the season after not scoring any during her first two seasons at Campbell. The Strongsville, Ohio, native has scored all three off of set piece opportunities.
"Gardner-Webb is a gritty, hardworking team," said head coach
Samar Azem. "They do a great job pressing you and don't really let you have a whole lot of time with the ball. I felt that our girls responded to that really well. We created some really good chances. I was really proud of them to come out here and get a win for the seniors."
Erin Scott led the Fighting Camels to its second consecutive shutout and seventh of the season. The Creighton transfer corralled three saves, including a key tip over the top crossbar of Erin Shamleffer's shot in the fifth minute of play.
"When Erin comes into the game, she's confident and coordinates the back line really well. She made some key saves. Our back six is really solid, but you have to keep getting better," said Azem.
Senior
Haley Thoma, who got her first career start for the Camels on Saturday, got things started in the first half with three shots within the first 10 minutes of action. All three of Thoma's shots were on target, but each was saved by Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Keely Brown.
Campbell had another solid scoring opportunity in the 19th minute, as
Shelby Denkert headed the ball towards the goal off a
Taylor Koester corner kick. The ball was deflected off of Brown's glove to a GWU defender, who then saved the ball off the goal line.
CU got on the board with just 27 seconds remaining in the opening frame as
Anna Brantley connected off of a Campbell free kick.
Shannon Wratchford delivered the ball into the box from the far right corner, and Brown attempted to save the ball, but Brantley received the rebound and tapped the ball into the back of the net.
The Fighting Camels came out of the half with energy with five shots in the opening 15 minutes of play.
McKenna de Graaf nearly doubled CU's lead in the 56th minute after getting her head on the ball off a corner kick delivered by Wratchford. A Gardner-Webb defender managed to kick the ball off the goal line to keep Campbell's lead at one goal.
In the 85th minute,
Skylar Wilcox fired away a powerful shot from the top of the box, but Brown made an impressive diving save to keep it out of the net.
One minute later, CU had another scoring opportunity as
Alexa Genas found
Kylee Arno, who put it in the back of the net, but she was called offsides.
Campbell fired away 16 shots over the course of the match to Gardner-Webb's seven. CU also held the advantage in shots on frame (11-3) and corner kicks (7-4). Thoma and
Rosie O'Neal paced the Fighting Camels with three shots each.
Up next, CU will travel to High Point, N.C., on Wednesday for a match up versus High Point at 7 p.m. in Vert Stadium.
