Camels sweep Gardner-Webb 3-0

Madison Linxwiler leads the way in CU's fifth-straight victory

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Campbell won its fifth-straight Big South Conference volleyball match Friday night with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-17) sweep at Gardner-Webb. Madison Linxwiler led the Camels with a match-high 12 kills.

Jessica Stocking put down 10 kills for Campbell (16-8, 5-4 BSC), who moves over .500 in league play for the first time this season. The Camels remain in a tie for third place in the conference standings with the victory.

Kayla Schanback led the Camel defensive efforts with 13 digs, while Summer Schuitema dished out a match-high 29 assists. The Big South's leading attacker, Allena Heath, registered seven kills.

"We did a good job of dictating play throughout the match," said Campbell head coach Greg Goral. "We executed our game plan and made smart adjustments when needed. I'm very proud of how we played tonight."

Campbell reeled off four-straight points to take an early 5-1 lead in the first set. It was an 8-3 advantage when the Runnin' Bulldogs (7-16, 1-9) called a timeout, and 13-6 after a kill from Heath.

A 6-0 spurt gave the Camels a commanding 19-8 lead in the opening frame before a Schuitema kill and a GWU attack error gave CU the 10-point set win.

An attack error by Hannah Lancaster was the final point in a 7-2 run that gave CU a 12-5 advantage midway through the second set. Campbell led 19-14 later in the frame, but GWU reeled off four-straight points to draw within one of the lead.

Linxwiler put the Camels ahead 21-19, but her attack error two rallies later tied the set at 21-21. CU responded with back-to-back points. After a Gardner-Webb timeout, Linxwiler dropped in two-straight aces to earn Campbell the set victory.

Campbell held a narrow one-point lead in the third set before using a 4-0 run to go ahead 11-6. The Camels led 14-10 and reeled off six-straight points to take a 20-10 advantage.

The Runnin' Bulldogs drew within 21-15 of the lead, but CU capitalized on back-to-back GWU errors to take a 23-15 advantage. Gardner-Webb could only come back within 23-17 of the lead before a kill from Stocking and an attack error from Joy Rhodes finished the Camels' 3-0 victory.

Rhodes registered 10 kills to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs while Lancaster tallied eight. Emma Milstead recorded a team-high 11 digs while Amanda Sahm had 26 assists.

Gardner-Webb hit just .104 in the match and committed 21 errors. Campbell held a 38-32 advantage in kills.

The Camels will quickly return to action tomorrow afternoon when they continue their four-match road trip in Clinton, S.C. against Presbyterian. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
